  2. Where are they? • Pelvic region • Center of pelvis • In between legs

  3. What hormones are produced? • The ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone. • Estrogen- a steroid hormone that produces female characteristics for a human • Progesterone- released by the corpus luteum to prepare the uterus for pregnancy

  4. What do the hormones do? • Regulate the menstrual cycle and pregnancy. • Development of female body characteristics, • breasts • body shape • body hair

  5. Feedback mechanisms & antagonistic hormones • The antagonistic hormone would be melatonin • The hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis is a critical part in the development and regulation of a number of the body's systems, such as the reproductive and immune systems. • Example giving birth causes hypothalamus to secrete oxytocin

  6. Glands of the female gonads • Ovaries • Placenta (when pregnant) • Uterus

  7. What happens when glands don’t operate properly? • Hypogonadism is when the ovaries are not producing enough sex hormones. This can usually cause Turner Syndrome, gonadal dysgenesis, and galactosemia. • To treat this, a doctor must replace the hormones in the ovaries to try and copy the normal hormone production.
