North Korea Tests Nuclear Weapon • North Korea announced last Monday that it tested a nuclear weapon • The U.S. called on the United Nations Security Council to take swift, strong action • Russia & China (key votes) were reluctant to go along because of possible war • Compromise resolution reached Saturday: • bans sale of materials for nuclear, biological and chemical weapons or ballistic missiles • Allows inspections of cargo going in and out of North Korea IKONOS satellite image of the Yongbyon nuclear facility, located about 100 kms (62 miles) north of Pyongyang, taken August 13, 2002. Korean Nuclear Test • North Korea has long range missiles that could possibly reach the west coast of the U.S. • Bush warned North Korea not to export any nuclear materials to foreign countries or groups • U.S. is worried about North Korea as a threat to our key allies in the region (Japan and South Korea) • Could set off a nuclear arms race in the region • Democrats are using the news to criticize Republicans for being distracted by Iraq South Korean riot policemen stand guard during an anti-North Korean rally in Seoul October 9, 2006. Impact of Microloans • How Yunus’ microloans work: • No collateral or down payment required • Loans repaid in manageable weekly payments • used to buy things like milking cows, bamboo to make stools, yarn for weaving, cell phones to sell calls • Has been an empowering force especially in places where women in particular have to struggle against repressive social and economic conditions • According to Microcredit Summit, in 2005, more than 100 million people worldwide received microloans from more than 3,100 institutions A woman with a cell phone financed through Grameen Bank. http://www.lnd.dk/contact.htm http://media.maps.com/magellan/Images/INDIA-W1.gif

  8. *Extra Credit Shanghai Daily on North Korean Nuclear Tests • China voted in favor of the U.N. resolution on sanctions toward N. Korea • China’s U.N. representative stressed that the sanctions can be lifted if N.
