  1. Meiosis & Mendelian Genetics NBO 4&5

  2. Mitosis Review • Big Ideas!!! • Chromosome condense and form SISTER CHROMATIDS. • Sis Chromatids pulled apart. • Each daughter cell now has HOMOLOGOUS PAIRS.

  3. Homologues vs Sis Chromatids

  4. Five Funners Slow Version

  5. Five Funners BIG Version

  6. Meiosis – makes ME 1. Meiosis makes cells that are different from parent. 2. Daughter cells contain HALF the genetic info. 3. 4 daughter cells created. NOT equal

  7. Vocab

  8. Five Funners BIG Version

  9. Animal Game: Platypus 2n=56 2n = _______ n = ______

  10. Crossing Over Genetic Variation, Genetic Variation

  11. Fertilization

  12. Mitosis Meiosis • Asexual • Chromosome Number the same • Used to build and repair damaged cells in a Eukaryote • Produce Gametes BUT is not sexually reproduction • Every cell produced is different • Genetic Variation

  13. Karyotyping Looks at the chromosomes to see if they are paired correctly

  14. Turner syndrome results from a single X chromosome (45, X or 45, X0). • Klinefelter syndrome, the most common male chromosomal disease, otherwise known as 47, XXY is caused by an extra X chromosome. • Edwards syndrome is caused by trisomy (three copies) of chromosome 18. • Down syndrome, a common chromosomal disease, is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. • Patau syndrome is caused by trisomy of chromosome 13. • Cri du chat (cry of the cat), from a truncated short arm on chromosome 5. The name comes from the babies' distinctive cry, caused by abnormal formation of the larynx. • 1p36 Deletion syndrome, from the loss of part of the short arm of chromosome 1. • Angelman syndrome – 50% of cases have a segment of the long arm of chromosome 15 missing.

  15. Turner Syndrome

  16. Alleles The building block of all genetics. Same gene just different variations.

  17. Genetics Vocab

  18. Genetics Vocab

  19. Why we need both set of words Homozygous and Heterozygous tell us what type of relationship the alleles have. Dominant and Recessive tell us about the type of protein the allele codes for.

  20. Punnett Squares
