  1. Direct Instruction Nattalie M. Ildefonso Méndez

  2. Direct Approach • Direct instruction is an approach to teaching within a teacher-directed classroom environment • This method of teaching is skills-oriented and it uses a phonics-based approach within the reading curriculum. • Teachers use training manuals and materials and follow carefully articulated lessons that are broken down into small segments. • Teachers do not move students to the next step without assurance that students have achieved what is necessary for that segment.

  3. Continue • Direct instruction's traditional reading practices are positively impacting children's scores.

  4. Advantage • Some advantages of direct instruction methods include the ability to easily explain to students why the content of the lesson is important, which helps to highlight the lesson's goal. • The direct instruction method is a widely recognized and accepted form of instruction, so less time will be needed for familiarizing students, other school staff or parents with the method. • Direct instruction is appropriate for teaching basic skills, concepts and facts. Student progress can also be measured easily. • This method works, not only for teachers who are speaking to a class, but for teachers who wish to use the small group, face-to-face method from time to time, according to Wisconsin Policy Research Institute Online.

  5. Disadvantage • The direct instruction method doesn't incorporate the teacher's personality or creativity within the lesson, as steps must be followed in a prescribed and direct order. • The direct instruction method requires effective oral communication skills. • Without those skills, students could find the content uninteresting, when in fact, it could be the speaker's delivery style that is keeping the students from learning.
