  3. What do their names mean? • The Santa Maria was made in a place called El Puerto de Santa Maria in Spain. This was the winter headquarters for the Royal Galleys of Spain. • Pinta means “painted one” thus the nickname for the second ship. • The Nina was originally named Santa Clara but changed by her master Juan Nino. Nina means “girl.
