  8. MSL today Present projects • DESIREE • FEL Centre • CRYRING  FAIR

  9. DESIREE: Two storage rings in one cooled vacuum chamber 2.5 m 4.7 m • Electrostatic • Double ring • Common straight section • Interaction between ions • Cryogenic • Cold ions • Excellent vacuum conditions • Common vacuum vessel 0.7 m

  14. MSL competence • The competence of MSL can be exemplified by the DESIREE project which requires most areas of our competence. • The unique design of DESIREE limits the possibility to use standard components. MSL has designed and constructed a major part of all the DESIREE components.

  15. MSL competence • Accelerator physics • Vacuum technology • Cryogenic technology • Mechanical design and construction • Electronics • IT and data

  16. 350 300 250 200 150 100 50 0 0 50 100 150 200 250 300 350 400 Competence: Accelerator physics Stabile working points (10keV) • Ion optics have been calculated from ions source to stored beams. • Design of optical elements • The required precision of optical elements, both from manufacturing and positioning. • Required stability of the HV-supplies • Diagnostics • Experience in low intensity beams from CRYRING Defocusing quadrupole (V) Focusing quadrupole (V)

  17. Competence: Vacuum technology • Low pressure crucial for long beam life times. • Pressure range, sources to rings: 10-4 – 10-12 mbar • UHV in combination with cryogenic temperatures limits the use of standard vacuum solutions – designs and materials must be vacuum and cryo compatible. ~5m3/<20K/<10-12mbar

  18. Competence: Cryogenics • 1.5 tons of aluminum will be cooled to <20K • Cryogenic temperatures limits the cooling power, so heat transfer must be minimized • Cryo-compatible materials must be used • Cryogenic parts have to interact with room temp: • Pump ports • Injection ports • Supports • Electric cables RT <20K

  19. Competence: Mechanics 120 tons • Idea -> Design -> CAD -> Manufacturing (int. & ext.) • Large vacuum chamber means heavy loads (120 tons!) • Positioning with high precision. • Key components have been manufactured and tested in the MSL workshop.

  20. Competence: Electronics • More than 200 HV supplies and amplifiers have been constructed and built at MSL. • Injection supply: -10kV to 10kV in ms • Noise level of all ring HV-supplies: DU/U<10-6 • Current amplifiers to detect ion beams in the femtoAmp range.

  21. Hardware & software Control of more than 250 parameters Diagnostics – data acquisition and analysis Safety systems Competence: IT and computing

  22. MSL, future projects • There is a strong need for accelerator physics in Sweden • ESS, MAX IV • Stockholm-Uppsala FEL, design report • Continuous development of DESIREE • Projects abroad

  23. Conclusion • MSL, with its combined resources, expects to continue to play an important role in accelerator physics and technology in Sweden and abroad. • MSL has the ambition to establish a group at the Physics Department at SU with both research and education in the field of accelerator physics and technology.

  24. MSL, final address Now that we are here, let’s discuss how we can work together with your group!
