  7. What are your personal and professional experiences of social media?

School Survey - June 2011 • Survey carried out in association with Adroit-e Research • Online survey completed by 354 pupils (mainly years 8, 9 and 10) and 44 teachers followed by data driven discussions • Main conclusions: • Vast majority of students use FB and have smart phones • Teachers are suspicious of uses within school but see the potential

  18. Opportunities: Discussion and debate • Questions can be used to encourage discussion, to consolidate learning or to provoke debate • Great opportunity for citizenship – digital democracies

  19. Challenges: Personal v professional • Keep them separate – set up new profiles using school email address • Never ‘friend’ a student • Encourage students to ‘like’ your Facebook page

  20. Challenges: Professional conduct • Teachers have been sacked for inappropriate use of Facebook • Use your common sense! • Delete any inappropriate comments made by students and follow it up • Always keep an eye on the page and remove from FB if no longer being used • IT policy
