  1. Natives Meet Europeans 8-1.2

  2. Relationships gone bad! • The Natives and the European got along fine at first contact! The Europeans actually depended on the Natives for survival!

  3. Alliances & land agreements were made between the Natives and the Europeans which greatly impacted the Cherokees, Catawba, & Yemassee. • Different understandings of the terms “land agreement” and “treaties” led to the destruction of their relationship!

  4. Also, European settlers were selling Native Americans into slavery!

  5. Catawba • Helped to protect settlers from other hostile Native tribes! • Died from small pox

  6. Cherokee • Helped the settlers fight against the Yemassee attack! • Settled mostly in the Up Country. • British signed a treaty with the Cherokees! Cherokees thought it was a treaty, while the Europeans sought sovereignty! • This led to the Cherokee War.

  7. Yemassee • Came from Florida fleeing the Spanish! • Initially there was peace in SC, until Yemassee attacked settlers for unfair Trade cost. • Cherokees and settlers killed many of the Yemassee during the Yemassee war!
