  8. Washington D.C. 1. Washington is the capital of the USA and the seat of the US Government. 2. Members of Congress meet at the US Capitol to make the laws. 3. There are 540 rooms in this huge building. 4. It has a great dome. 5. The cornerstone was laid by George Washington in 1793. 6. In and around the Capitol you can look at works of art commemorating famous events and persons of American history. 7. The Washington Monument was of course built in memory of George Washington. 8. It is made of white marble. 9. It is about 170 m. tall and it can be seen from anywhere in the city. 10. You can take an elevator to the top where you have a superb view. 11. There is a Capitol to the east, the White House to the north, the Lincoln Memorial to the west and in spring beautiful Japanese cherry in the south. 12. The Lincoln Monument is impressive building with 36 columns. 13. It is very beautiful in night lights on it. 14. Inside there is a marble statue of Lincoln sitting in a large art – chair.
