Customer Owned Fiber networks • Networks using optical fibres constructed, bought or leased by some network users/customers • Wide independence of Customer Owned Fiber (COF) networks on carriers • Unique window in time for fiber assets or IRU • Getting fiber means controlling the network • Path to deployment of different wavelengths for different networks, lambda services, QoS on backbone, optical switching etc., when it makes sense • COF networks are emerging chronologically from bottom of hierarchy to top

Connections for WAN RENs • Interconnection of REN segments by carier’s lambda services (e.g.: Starlight, CESNET, Pioneer, etc.) • Interconnection of regional area REN’s lambda services (Ca*net4) • Long distance owned or leased fibre, e.g.: • fibre owned or leased by a group of universities, etc. (UCAID, CENIC, SWITCH, CESNET, etc.) • fibre owned or leased by a group of RENs, etc. (CANARIE?, GEANT/DANTE?, Nordunet?, etc.)

  4. RENs using own or leased fibers • Advantages given by Customer Owned Fiber (COF) networks are important for RENs • Developing COF networks: • ORAN, I-wire, CalREN, SWITCH, CESNET, SANET, Pioneer, …. • Prepared COF network: • National LightRail, USA (2003) …. • European fiber connections?

Equipment and servicesfor COF RENs • Significant investments in LH/ULH optronics and ongoing maintenance are required • Fiber leasing or maitenance of own fibers instead of carier services? • Optronics vendors now are becoming aware (at least in USA) of the non-carrier (enterprise, RENs) market for their WAN gear

PoP to PoP fiber lengthsin COF REN • Metropolitan lines < cca 80 km (e.g. COF RENs in Praha or Brno, etc.) • Long hall (LH) lines: cca 80-400 km (e.g. PEI, SWITCH, CESNET, etc.) • Ultra long hall (ULH) lines > cca 400 km (e.g.: US National LightRail?) • Air distances are 50 – 90% of this due to terrain profiles and fibre curves

  7. Type of lines depending on in-line equipment (equipment placed away of PoPs) • Type 0: None (NIL) • Type 1: Dispersion compensators (DCIL) • Type 2: Optical amplifiers (OAIL) • Type 3: Regenerators (RIL) (Possibilities depends on distance, fibre type, basic speed, color count, etc.)

Ostrava – Olomouc (Long distance GE line since January 7, 2002) • 149 km leased fiber, in-line L2 switch used as regenerator • Traffic statistics: http://www.cesnet.cz/provoz/zatizeni/ • Line cards: GE for GSR with GBIC-ZX • Catalyst 3512 XL with GBIC-ZX • GBIC-ZX: Pin: 0 to 4,77dBm, Pout: -23 to 0dBm, powerbudget: 23dB

Praha-Pardubice(Long distance GE line since May 17, 2002) • 189 km leased fibre G.652, attenuation 44.65dB, without in-line equipment • Traffic statistics: http://www.cesnet.cz/provoz/zatizeni/ • Line cards: GE for GSR with GBIC-ZX • Optical amplifier: Keopsys KPS-BT-C-21-Bo-FA 21dBm booster, C-band singlechannel • Opticalattenuator: 5dB (for optical amplifier input)

  11. Recomended line end aplication for 1 Gb/s and 2.5 Gb/s lines (NIL) • Booster only - up to 180km • Booster with preamp - up to 220km • Booster with preamp and Raman - up to 270km

Prepared long distance single fiber Fast Ethernet lines (NIL) • Two colors in one fiber, one color for one direction (bi-directional transfer) • Fiber length up to 125 km (G.652) • Price of single fibre leasing: 51-64% of pair price (depends on provider) • Price is comparable with carrier’s 34 Mb/s SDH service (but this use microwave transfer, at least in part)

  14. StarLight-NetherLight and further • Extension of international experimental lambda switching network to Praha expected from January 2003 (lambda 2.5 Gb/s Amsterdam - Praha), upgrade to 10 Gb/s from July 2003 (lamda or leased fiber) • Further extensions?

Long distance 10 GE fibre lines • Expected distance up to 300km on dispersion shifted fiber (G.655), i.e. NIL (Nothing In-Line) • Expected distance up to 300km with in-line chromatic dispersion compensation only on classic fiber (G.652), i.e. DCIL or NNIL (Near Nothing In-Line) type • for G.652 compensation of chromatic dispersion by DCF (Dispersion Compensating Fiber) each 50-60 km • Booster, preamp and Raman optical amplifiers on end points

  17. Prepared testingof 10 GE fibre lines • Field fiber testbed with dispersion shifted fiber (G.655) and classic fiber (G.652) – from December 2002 • Combination of intercity G.655 and first mile G.652 fibers?? • Connection of interface cards an optical amplifiers: results depends on parameters of used optical devices (lasers in Cisco interface cards or other hardware)

  18. Availability of Cisco 10GE cards- long reach (40 km) version • Catalyst 6500 1550nm: yes • OSR 7600 1550nm: yes • GSR 12400 1550nm: to be 2002 • ONS 15454: is prepared • other producer: we are interested to negotiate testing

  19. Long distance fiber line registration service? • We offer registration service for NIL and DCIL lines (for better experience exchange) • over 80 km for 1 Gb/s and 2.5 Gb/s on fiber pair • over 40 km for 10 Gb/s and more on fiber pair • over 20 km for 100 Mb/s and more on single fiber
