The Struggle for Survival: The Endangered Mexican Walking Fish

The Mexican Walking Fish, a unique amphibious creature, dwells in lakes and ponds in Mexico and relies on insects and small fish for sustenance. These fascinating animals can detect food by smell and have the remarkable ability to regrow body parts. Unfortunately, they are on the brink of extinction due to habitat destruction, pollution from Mexico City, and predation by the invasive Tilapia Carp. In 1998, their population was estimated at 1,500 per square mile, but now only around 25 remain. Conservation efforts are crucial to preserving their habitat and removing threats.

  2. Their Environment • Live in Mexican lakes and ponds • Feed on insects, worms, and small fish • Find food by smelling and sucking it into their bodies like a vacuum • Can regrow parts of their bodies

Why are they extinct? • People have been draining lakes, and waterways have been polluted by waste water coming from Mexico city.   • The Tilapia Carp eats the eggs of the Mexican Walking Fish • Also, poor water conditions • “The estimation of their population in 1998 used to be around 1,500 per square mile, but to this day, there are around 25 per square mile”

  4. How can we save them? • Preserve its habitat • Take the Tilapia Carp out of the waters
