Sustainable Design Strategies for Reusable Cameras: Reducing E-Waste and Enhancing Marketability

This document outlines a project aimed at transforming disposable cameras into sustainable, reusable products. It discusses the goals of creating a more marketable camera by shifting from disposable to reusable designs and tackling e-waste. Key solutions include using recyclable plastic components, optimizing battery use with smaller alternatives, and reusing circuitry when feasible. The marketing strategy emphasizes highlighting environmental benefits to consumers. The proposal aims to not only reduce waste but also potentially save costs while making the product more appealing.

  2. Table Of Contents • Objectives • Disassembly • How it operates • Solutions • Marketing • Matrices

  3. Objectives • Shift focus from “disposable” to “reusable” • Create a more marketable product.

  4. Disassembly • Stickers and film were easily removed • Camera is made mostly of plastic • Two metal springs and circuit board are only pieces not made of plastic Plastic parts Non-plastic parts

  5. How It Works • Battery charges flash • Film is wound and spring loaded by manual winding • Shutter button releases spring and shutter, also charge is released in a flash

  6. Solution #1 • Cameras will be collected • Plastic is easily recycled • Melt used cases • Reform into new cases • Reduction in wasted plastic

  7. Solution #2 • Current Batteries contain more energy than necessary • AA Batteries contain 140 mAh • Camera only requires a battery with 48.6 mAh • Silver-Oxide batteries are smaller and more sustainable • Or, a smaller Alkaline Silver Oxide Alkaline (New School) (Old School)

  8. Solution #3 • Reuse circuitry (unless damaged) • Quality Control (date markers) • Test life of circuit board Circuit board on camera (above) and detached from camera (below) • Requires most manual labor • Most dramatic impact on e-waste

  9. Marketing • Smaller battery will allow case size to be reduced • Green sticker to represent new e-waste reduction methods • Link to website for people to learn what is changed

  10. Decision Matrix

  11. Decision Matrix

  12. Conclusion • Disposable cameras are unsustainable • Changes could save money and create less e-waste
