Earthquake Country Alliance New Confederation of Alliances: Southern California Earthquake Alliance Bay Area Earthquake Alliance Central Coast Earthquake Alliance Redwood Coast Tsunami Workgroup Includes State and Federal Agencies Each alliance includes leading earthquake professionals, emergency managers, government officials, business and community leaders, and others that provide earthquake information and services.   Mission: The Earthquake Country Alliance unites leaders in government, disaster response, science, business, media, education and local communities to: inspire responsibility for community earthquake safety and recovery; increase awareness, preparedness, and mitigation; improve response and recovery planning; reduce losses in future earthquakes.

  3. The Great California ShakeOut • Statewide, annualearthquake drill • October 15, 2009 • Goal: at least 10 million participants! (5.5 million In 2008So Call drill) • Based on earthquakehazards of each region • ShakeOut.orgis being updatedwith details for this year’s drill and 2009 registration forms.

  4. Proposed ShakeOut 2009 Goals • Participation of at least 10 million people in the ShakeOut Drill • Yet the ShakeOut is not only about the drop, cover, and hold on drill. It's about getting people talking, engaged, dealing with preparedness. • Shift the culture in California about earthquakes • Shakeout allows people to make a difference in the preparedness of their community. • Significant increase in earthquake readiness at all levels • Survey of 2008 participants shows many preparedness actions taken by participants • Home Depot sales of contents mitigation and preparedness products increase 261% from Nov. 2007 to Nov. 2008.

Key ShakeOut Preparedness Messages At home, work, and school: • Consider what would happen in a bigearthquake and what you can do now to reduce damage and recover quickly. • Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” • Secure Your Space • Top heavy furniture • Water heaters • TVs & electronics • Vulnerable structures • Etc. • Store More Water • 1 gallon per person per day for at least3 days and ideally for 2 weeks • Have a Fire Extinguisher(s) • Everyone must know proper use

Proposed Timeline • April – May:Revise ShakeOut.org to be statewide, choose regional scenarios, develop regional recruitment structure, revise handouts and other promotional resources • mid April:“Save the Date” notices sent to organizations, schools, government agencies, etc., who participated in 2008. • School notice sent 4/14: As of 4/17, 98 registrants totaling 1.5 million participants • May/June:Outreach to local government, ECA associates, other advocates. Secure sponsorships. • June:ShakeOut 2009 KickOff Event. Perhaps 3-4 concurrent media events statewide, connected with video conferencing. • June– July:Local kickoff activities and recruitment efforts targeted for schools, businesses, community groups, and other organizations. • End of July: Completion of all campaign materials, drill manuals, PSAs, etc. including materials in multiple languages and for vulnerable populations.

  10. Proposed Timeline • August:Increase recruitment efforts for individuals and families. Encourage volunteers to spread word about ShakeOut (CalVolunteers) • September: National Preparedness Month- support preparedness activities and promote registration for ShakeOut. Announce CEA Mitigation program? • Early October: PBS documentary airing and related promotion • October 15:Great California ShakeOut 2009 • November 1:All participants emailed with updates and encouraged to keep getting prepared year-round. ShakeOut 2010 registration opened! • November 15:Post-drill surveys completed • December-March:Email ShakeOut registrants each month: share results and earthquake news, encourage preparedness and mitigation, etc., as part of broader statewide preparedness messaging and activities (Strategic Plan)
