  12. Who attends Swedish for Immigrants (SFI)? Adults registered in the population register, aged 16 and up Participants lack basic knowledge of Swedish. How is SFI organized? Needs of the individual The course is to be characterized by flexibility It is possible to combine or integrate courses in SFI with other studies, practical experience, employment or other work How does assessment take place?   13. What are post-secondary training programs? The idea is that they are to lead to a new level within a profession, or a completely new profession. Most post-secondary training programs last for 1-1½ years.   14. Qualified if - Learning disabilities 20 + or Have completed upper secondary studies for those with learning disabilities. Has shortcomings in the knowledge covered by the course. Must also be able to follow the course, based on previous studies or other work. How is adult education for individuals with learning disabilities organized? Non-compulsory A fee is charged for the courses No formal eligibility for further study provided Courses in, for example, art, dance, theatre, music, design and fashion, handicrafts, media, flying, fitness… Some courses entitle a student to a study grant, others do not. Provided outside the public system Funded by the government Arranged by an individual provider (principal) Providers can be individuals, study associations, trusts or educational companies. May be provided after the National Agency for Education has agreed to be the supervising authority. Qualifications Some require that a student be aged 18 and have attended compulsory school. Most courses however, require completed upper secondary or equivalent. Most artistic courses require work samples. Admission tests are arranged for courses in dance, drama and music. Bräcke Kommun Margareta N, 090309 Challenges for VET in Sweden • Ageing population - large wave of retirements particularly in many vocational trades • A need to investigate the link between education outputs and labour market needs • Investigate the barriers – real and perceived – to non-traditional groups entering VET • Investigate how to improve access to VET for people currently outside the education system • In coming years, major reforms will be introduced to support three distinct forms of upper secondary education focusing on 1. academic 2. vocational 3. upper secondary apprenticeship training
