  2. The History of Hip-Hop • Hip hop music originated in 1970s block parties in New York City, specifically The Bronx. Hip hop culture, including graffiti and b-boying. • In the 1930s more than a sixth of Harlem residents were from the West Indies, and the block parties of the '80s were closely similar to sound systems in Jamaica. These were large parties, originally outdoors, thrown by owners of loud and expensive stereo equipment, which they could share with the community. • Rap music emerged from block parties after ultra-competitive DJs isolated percussion breaks, those being the favorites among dancers, and MCs began speaking over the beats; in Jamaica, a similar musical style called dub developed from the same isolated and elongated percussion breaks. • "Rappers Delight" by the Sugar hill Gang is the first song that was recorded & released by a hip hop crew, and therefore is considered the first true hip hop release, though "King Tim III" by the R&B group Fatback Band and "Groovy Ghost Show" by Casper are sometimes considered to be the first because they featured rapping, and predated "Rapper's Delight" by a few months.

  4. Demographic • In fact, 70% of all hip-hop music is bought by white teenagers age 18-34. • It's "proof" that hip-hop has crossed over into the mainstream, hip-hop is no longer "just a black thing" but has become part of the fabric of multicultural American life. • 37.1% of 15-25-year-olds in China love hip hop?  • The global hip hop community: twenty four million people between the ages of 19-34, from a range of nationalities, ethnic groups and religions. Their collective spending power is $500 billion annually in the U.S. alone. • majority of hip hop listeners are rich white kids in high school, if not younger.

  6. Public perception of the genre... The public have never been to fond of hip-hop music because it embraces in sex, drugs and violence. However not all sub genres do this but the majority does, this is seen as a problem although artist whom embrace in sex, drugs and violence still manage to sell their CD’s and fill up their concerts! Also many governments and parents would be quick to point the finger at hip-hop music for the raise in crime because they believe hip-hop music influences as well as inspires and makes people do things they would not normally... On the other hand Hip-hop is seen as a cool genre and is one of the most valued along with the most listened genre by teenagers...

  9. Competition The Source is a United States-based, monthly full-colour magazine covering hip-hop music, politics, and culture, founded in 1988. It is the world's second longest running rap periodical, behind United Kingdom-based publication Hip Hop Connection. The Source was founded as a newsletter in 1988. The current president of the publication is Jeremy Miller. From humble beginnings, the Source had grown into one of the largest and most influential hip-hop publications in the United States. It had even grown to the point of being called "The Bible of Hip-Hop.“ Currently the future of The Source is uncertain. The publication lost subscribers due to not delivering magazines on time and faces numerous lawsuits totalling over a million dollars. Rival magazine XXL is now the best-selling hip-hop magazine. The Source is losing major advertising due to the feuds with Eminem and 50 Cent
