Scenario:a researcher is investigating the theory that attitude to gun control is related to gender
Did you say: Attitude and Gender
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TWO CATEGORICAL VARIABLES When we are analysing the relationship between two categorical variables, we use either a two way percentaged table or a segmented bar chart.
In our scenario, what is the INDEPENDENT variable and what is the DEPENDENT variable?
Our researcher is trying to ascertain whether attitude to gun control depends on gender, so INDEPENDENT VARIABLE = GENDER DEPENDENT VARIABLE = ATTITUDE TO GUN CONTROL
Our researcher interviewed 68 males and 52 females. He found that 42 males and 40 females were in favour of gun control. We set up our two way table with the INDEPENDENT VARIABLE in columns!
As the table currently stands, it does not yet reflect fairly the relationship between gender and attitude to gun control. WHY NOT?
Yes, that’s right! The researcher has interviewed more males and females, so to reduce everything to the same level playing field, we must calculate PERCENTAGES.
CONCLUSION We now write a conclusion, quoting figures from our percentaged table: The evidence from our percentaged table supports the conclusion that attitude to gun control is related to gender. We find that 76.9% of females in the sample supported gun control, compared to only 61.8% of the males in the sample.
