  2. What is physical activity? • What do you think physical activity means? • Can you give examples of physical activity? PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - is any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that result in an expenditure of energy. What does that mean? We do not have to be an all star athlete to be physically active. Playing outside with our friends, walking to school and participating in gym class are all examples of physical activity.

  3. What types of physical activity do you enjoy? • As active kids we are involved in different types of physical activity. • What is your favorite way to be physically active? Do you like to walk to school with friends? Have you tried dance, gymnastics or figure skating? What sports do you like to play in the winter? Do you like to play outdoor team sports?

  4. What does it mean to be physically fit? • In your workbooks, draw what you think a physically fit person looks like. • What type of activities does this person participate in?

  5. Physical Fitness • Some people may think that you have to be an athlete to be considered physically fit. • Everyone can be physically fit! • Achieving physical fitness involves taking part in a variety of activities necessary for our overall physical health.

  6. Cardiorespiratory endurance Muscular Strength Five components of Physical Fitness Balanced Physical Fitness can be broken down into five different categories. Jumping jacks are a great example of cardiorespiratory endurance. One minute of jumping jacks! At gym facilities many people lift weights to increase muscular strength.

  7. Muscular endurance Flexibility Five Components of Physical Fitness TRY THIS! 15 sit ups 15 push ups (from toes or knees) How do your muscles feel? Do you stretch after physical activity? Can you think of any stretches?

  8. Five Components of Physical Fitness Body Composition Body composition refers to the amount of fat-free tissue and fat tissue in the body. Fat-free tissue is made up of muscle, bone and organs. Although everyone needs fat on their body, too much can be unhealthy. Too much body fat can make it difficult to play and be physically active because we are carrying around unnecessary weight. At a healthy body weight we should feel comfortable in our clothes and feel energized to play.

  9. Physical Activity and Fitness • Physical Fitness is not just about how we look, it is also about how we feel everyday. • Being physically active throughout the day in a variety of activities will help us achieve physical fitness. • Physical fitness gives us more energy for school and playing with friends!
