  2. Physical Fitness • The ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough energy to respond to unexpected demands • It is comprised of TWO components: • Health-related • Skill-related

  3. Health Related Component • Affects general health and well being • Will improve with proper training • Increase energy levels

  4. Health Related Components • Cardiovascular Fitness • Muscular Strength • Muscular Endurance • Flexibility • Body Composition

  5. CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS • The efficiency of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply the muscles with nutrients and oxygen while one is physically active • Examples: • 12min run, step test, beep test

  7. Muscular Strength • The maximum force that a muscle can exert when making a single contraction • Examples: • vertical jump, leg press, chest press, grip test

  9. Muscular Endurance • The ability of muscles to contract over a period of time without fatiguing • Examples: • Push ups, curl ups

  11. Flexibility • The range of motion that is possible around a joint • Example: • Sit and reach

  13. Body Composition • The ratio of fat to lean body tissue, including; muscle, bone, water and connective tissue such as ligaments, cartilage and tendons. • Usually measured in percent body fat • Examples: • BMI

  15. Skill-Related Components • Limited by genetic make-up • Can be improved with practice • Helps improve performance in sports • Does not affect overall health

Skill-Related Components • Agility- the ability to quickly and efficiently change body composition and direction (ex. dance, football, soccer) • Balance- the ability to maintain the body in proper equilibrium (ex. Yoga, skiing, fencing) • Coordination- the integration of the nervous and muscular system to produce correct, graceful, and harmonious body movements (ex. Field hockey, handball, gymnastics)

  17. Skills Continued... • Power- the ability to produce maximum force in the shortest period of time (ex. Sprints, basketball lay up) • Reaction Time- the length of time required to initiate a response to a stimulus (ex. Badminton, karate) • Speed- the ability to rapidly propel the body or part of the body from one point to another (ex. Baseball soccer, hockey)
