The Code of Napoleon

The Code of Napoleon, enacted in 1804, aimed to establish legal equality for all citizens, abolishing special privileges for nobles and clergy. Key features included the end of feudal rights and the right to trial by jury. However, stark inequalities persisted, particularly in family law: parents held significant authority over children, and husbands retained absolute power over wives’ property rights. This duality of promoting equality while enforcing traditional gender roles highlights the complexities and contradictions within Napoleon's legal framework.
