  1. Uploading files using Internet Explorer as an FTP Program You can move your files to your web space via FTP. It is free and very intuitive.

  2. Step One: Open Internet Explorer (the browser) • You need to use Internet Explorer. This will not work with Netscape or AOL. • Open your ftp site • The address for uploading isftp.tripod.com(type this into the address bar after deleting the http)

  3. Free & Easy FTP • Internet Explorer (not Netscape) • Type: ftp.tripod.com • Log in with your username and password

  4. Free & Easy FTP • This window is in theREMOTE SERVER. You should see your folders and files here. Right now there will only be an index. You will replace it with your own. • Minimize the window by hitting the Restore Down button(boxes, top right) ftp://

  5. Step Two: Locate the Files on your Local Computer • Open the program “Windows Explorer” on your PC (right click on the start button, hit Explore) • Locate the files (web pages, pictures, documents, etc.) that you want to upload (you’ll want to actually see the icons of the files in the right pane of the Explorer window) • Minimize the “Windows Explorer” window and move it beside your “ftp” window • Drag the files that you want to upload from Windows Explorer into your ftp site

  6. Free & Easy FTP • The two windows can be minimized and lined up side by side. LOCAL COMPUTER REMOTE SERVER

  7. Free & Easy FTP • Click and Drag the files from your local computer to the proper folders in the remote server. REMOTE SERVER LOCAL COMPUTER

  8. Free & Easy FTP • There it is! You should see a copy of the file in your ftp site. • Drag over as many of your files as you need. • If updating a page that already exists in your ftp site, you will be asked if you want to “replace existing” file….say YES. Your updated page will replace the old page. • Your filing system (all of the files and folders) have to be exactly the same for your website to work correctly. If you have pictures in an images folder on your Local Computer, you have to have an images folder in the Remote Server with the same pictures in it.

  9. Make sure it all works! • Check your site on http://yourusername.tripod.com • Are your images there? • Do the links work? • Be careful of absolute/relative addresses. • Check on another computer. • Did you link everything properly? • Need any more help….email an instructor…we would be happy to help!
