This chapter explores the concept of gravitational potential energy and its relationship to conservation of energy. It discusses how potential energy increases with height and how this energy converts to kinetic energy as an object falls. Examples include the velocity of a ball released from rest and a roller coaster moving down a frictionless track. The effects of non-conservative forces, like friction, and the limitations of the potential energy formula ( PE = mgh ) when moving away from the Earth’s surface are also examined.

  1. Chapter 7 Potential Energy

  2. Gravitational Potential Energy The higher you are, the more energy you have.

  3. Conservation of Energy

  4. Conservation of Energy (no friction)

  5. Consider a ball at some height above the ground. Potential Energy No Velocity Some Velocity

  6. h Conservation of Energy What is the velocity v of the ball at the bottom if the ball is released from rest?

  7. Example 2 What is the velocity v of the ball when it is at h/3? h h/3

  8. Example 3 If the ball is initially travelling at v0, what is the velocity v of the ball when it is at h/3? h h/3

  9. Find the final speed

  10. Roller Coaster A roller coaster slides down a frictionless track at height h with initial velocity v0. Find the velocity at A.

  11. Pendulum

  12. Potential energy In a spring

  13. How fast will it go?

  14. Wf Work done by friction (Non-conservative force)

  15. Two Potential Energy? Later in Chapter 11, we will learn another equation for gravitational potential energy: PEG=mghis only true near the planet’s surface (where g is a constant). Far away the gravitational field gets weak (where g gets smaller) and PEG=mghis no longer true.

  16. What we left out (read at home) 7.6: Electric PE (will study in PHYS 172) 7.7: Energy diagrams 7.8: PE in fuels

  17. What you learned • Conservation of energy • Different types of PE: gravitational, spring
