  4. When You Can’t Breathe Larry Cline - Hardin Valley church of Christ - 2-9-2014

  5. In One Day Job Lost Everything! • ALL HIS MATERIAL GOODS. • Job 1:14-17 • 14a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15and the Sabeans attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword,

  6. and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

  7. ALL HIS CHILDREN. • Job 1:18-19 • 18While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

  8. HIS HEALTH. • Job 2:7-8 • 7Then satanwent out from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8And he took a potsherd to scrape himself while he was sitting among the ashes.

  9. HIS WIFE’SSUPPORT. • Job 2:9 • Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!”

  10. Bad things happen to good people…

  11. Do People Suffer As A Result Of Their Sin? • YES • Romans 6:23 • For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  12. Hebrews 12:5-7 • 5and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, “MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM; 6FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES.” 7It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom [his] father does not discipline?

  13. NO • John 9:1-3 • 1As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3Jesus answered, “[It was] neither [that] this man sinned, nor his parents; but [it was] so that the works of God might be displayed in him.”

  14. Luke 13:1-3 • 1Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2And Jesus said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were [greater] sinners than all [other] Galileans because they suffered this [fate]? 3I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

  15. Job claims to be faithful to God and is never refuted.

  16. What do you say to a person? It’s not that you have the answers to their questions… it’s that you cared enough to come.

  17. Look to Job and follow his example.

  18. FIRST: • Job worshipped God. • Job 1:20-22 • 20Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. 21He said, “Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.” 22Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.

  19. SECOND: • Job questioned God. • Job 3:11 • “Why did I not die at birth, come forth from the womb and expire?”

  20. Job 3:16-19 • 16“Or like a miscarriage which is discarded, I would not be, as infants that never saw light. 17There the wicked cease from raging, and there the weary are at rest. 18The prisoners are at ease together; they do not hear the voice of the taskmaster. 19The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master.”

  21. FINALLY: • Job trusted God. • Job 42:1-5 • 1Then Job answered the LORD and said, 2“I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted. 3‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have declared that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.” 4‘Hear, now, and I will speak; I will ask You, and You instruct me.’

  22. IN THE END • He regained his wealth. • He received twice as much as he lost. • He had 10 more children.

  23. God will take care of you. • Brokennessis a part of life. • It proves us and prepares us. • It comes to the righteous and unrighteous. • Our goal should be to let Gods’ glory be seen through us. • God is God, and we are not Him.
