  3. SECTIONALISM • Devotion to one section of the country instead of the whole country

  4. NORTH • Center of industrial growth • Rivers provided water power for machines • Rivers were natural highways • Erie Canal • Steamboats & railroads invented before 1850 • Immigrants land in NYC & Boston and provided cheap labor • National bank rechartered • Tariffs increased in 1816

  5. SOUTH • Economy depended on farming • Cotton was #1 cash crop • Cotton gin increases production (Eli Whitney) • Need more land • Plantation class vs. slaves (distinct class differences in the South)

  6. WEST • Agricultural (small farms) • More connected with North with new transportation (i.e. canals, RR’s, & roads) • Growing fast!

  7. MISSOURI COMPROMISE • 11 free states • 11 slave states • Upset balance of power in Congress • Great Compromiser, Henry Clay

  8. 3 PARTS • Missouri enters as a slave state • Maine enters as a free state • The 36’30” line is established. Any territory north of the line would be free, anything south would be slave.
