Grades 1-5 • Jazz GO by pbskids at http://pbskids.org/jazz/ This website gives a brief jazz timeline and introduces children to musical terms like rhythm, melody, and harmony. The website gives brief biographies of jazz greats and shows how the genre of jazz has influenced other musical genres like rock and roll, disco, and hip-hop. • Marsalis, Wynton. Jazz A-B-Z A great jazz musician in his own right, Wynton Marsalis introduces young readers to the jazz musicians that influenced his music. Large detailed portraits and alliteration make this fun to read for all ages. The bios at the books end also provide reference for those who are new to jazz music. Grades 6 and up • Monceaux, Morgan. Jazz: My Music, My People An ALA notable book for reluctant young readers, this jazz book sketches out the lives of jazz greats that captured the author’s attention. Ages 8 and up • Orgill, Roxane. If I Only Had a Horn Young Louis Armstrong A great work of non-fiction highlighting the life of jazz great Louis Armstrong. It begins with his life in poverty in New Orleans and ends with Satchmo fulfilling his dreams and becoming a great musician. Ages 5-12 • Pinkney, Andrea Davis. Ella Fitzgerald the tale of a vocal virtuosa Andrea Pinkney and her husband illustrator Brian Pinkneyweave together a great biography of jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald. The tale is narrated by Scat Cat Monroe and gives great incite into the life and musical style of Ella Fitzgerald. Ages 5-12 • Pinkney, Andrea. Duke Ellington The Piano Prince and His Orchestra. This book is also written by the husband and wife team and has received numerous awards and honors including the Coretta Scott King Book Award. This biography is well written and immerses the reader into the time period and the music. Ages 5-12 • Raschka, Chris. Charlie Parker Played Be Bop This book is based on the Charlie Parker recording “A Night in Tunisia” and is more of an introduction to the jazz style Be Bop. The words and rhythmic and the illustrations bring jazz to life. This book is definitely for the younger reader. Ages 5 to 10. • Weatherford, Carole Boston. Becoming Billie Holiday This is a novel in verse that details the early life of Billie Holiday when she was Eleanor Fagan. The poetry in the book is beautifully written and addresses social issues through the eyes of Holiday as she grows up. Ages 12 and up. • Various Artists. Jazz for Kids: Sing, Clap, Wiggle and Shake This CD is a fabulous collection of great jazz songs that will get any fun loving kid out of their seats and introduce them to some of jazz’s premier vocalists. Artists include Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Carmen McRae.
