THEPERMANENTMARRIAGE–BLOSSOM AND WILTINTERACTIONS DIVORCE CAN BE SEEN PRECEDENT TO A DIVORCE (HJOHN GOTTMAN AND COLLEAGUES, NOTORIOUS) Couples whom will divorce: can be interviewed on 5 aspects; if the negative outweigh the positive; they most likely will be departed in 4 years. I. Fondness and admiration: a.Full of love ? b.Full of respect? c.Positive emotional warmth? d.Positive humor? e.Positive affection? f. Emphatic of good times? g.Complement each other? II. “we-ness vs. me-ness”. 1.Unity in: a.Beliefs b.Values c.Goals d.Use “us”? e.Use “we”? f. Use us and we more than “I” or “me”? III. LOVE MAPS 1.Does couple describe history of their relationship in vivid detail and positive energy? 2.Are they open with personal information about themselves and their partner? IV. PURPOSE AND MEANING (instead of Chaos) 1.Does couple talk about their life together in terms of pride over the hardships they have overcome? 2.DO they talk about shared goals and aspirations? V. SATISFACTION INSTEAD OF DISAPOINTMENT. 1.Does the couple say that their partner and their marriage have exceeded expectations? 2.Are they satisfied and grateful for what they have in each other?

Negative patterns in marriage can be changed. 1.Teach couples how to understand each other better. 2.Increase affection 3.Attend to each other and influence each other more 4.Practice healthy conflict resolution 5.Create shared meaning within their relationship 6.Acquire new skills or relearn earlier patterns of interaction through relationship education courses. VII. Passionate Love VS. VIII. Companionate Love. IX. DANIEL O’Leary surveyed 300 married adults; for ~20 years. 1.Questioned: “How in love are you with your partner”? a. Very intense being 1 a.Not in love at all at a #7. b.Only 46% reported being very intensely in love. 01.Intense love with each other apt to report high levels of thinking positively. 02.Affectionate behaviors 03.Sexual intercourse 04.Sharing novel and challenging activities with their partners 05.General feeling of life happiness. c.People in “unhappy relationships” decline in satisfaction in life i.Self esteem ii.Overall health iii.There was no benefits in remaining in unhappy marriages converse that to divorcing. Page 9 COHABITUATION AND MARRIAGE I. Cohabit before marriage –better marriages “know what they are getting into”. II. Cohabit before marriage – increase likelihood of separating that those who do not cohabit. a. why? i.Selection effect – those who are more mature and have stronger relationships follow the traditional path to marriage.

Two distinct types of cohabitation relationships a.Engaged cohabitation- engaged before moving in together –More successful b.Pre-engaged cohabitation – couple becomes engaged after moving in together – less successful. IV. How well cohabitation accepted in the culture? a.25,000 married and cohabiting couples / 27 countries b.Gender beliefs c.Happiness gap – between married and cohabiting women. d.Women’s relative unhappiness in more gender restrictive , religious countries is a reaction to the negative connotations cohabitation has in their culture. e.Metrical V. Cohabiting Vs. Married Families a.Compared mother – finance relationships in three types of families i.Single mother families ii.Two parent cohabiting families iii.Two parent married families – BEST parent – infant attachments in this category of families.
