  2. Essential Questions • Why did write down these laws and punishments? • What laws have endured throughout human civilization and are now part of our laws? • Which laws no longer apply to our culture that did apply to Babylonian culture?

  3. Hammurabi – Who was he? • Became king of the Babylonian Empire c. 1792 • Wrote the code in 1760 BCE • Died c. 1750 BCE • Conquer much?

  4. Why is the code important? • First ever recorded code of laws • Specific crime = specific punishment • Made allowances for all groups (men, women, rich, poor, slave, free person)

  5. Explore the code • Pick 6 laws • Tell me: • 1) The number of the law • 2) Who is the law aimed at? • 3) Does this law apply today? • If so, how? • Example • 1) Law #258 • 2) This law targets land owners and wealthy citizens • 3) Yes, This law applies through minimum wage.
