  2. Training Objectives • Identify lift hazards • Understand OSHA equipment requirements • Know how to inspect equipment • Take necessary precautions when working in or near a lift to prevent accidents and injuries

  3. Lift Hazards • Falling out of the lift • Tipping vehicle over • Power lines • Overhead obstructions • Falling objects

  4. Know The Equipment • Operating and maintenance manual are kept on the lift • Occupants Allowed - 2 • Platform Capacity – 396 pounds • Platform Height – 9’ 6” • Platform Width – 2’ 2” • Platform Width Extended – 5’ 6”

  5. Load Capacity • Occupants Allowed – 2 • Load Capacity – 396 lbs.

  6. Controls • Controls both in lift and on vehicle • Controls within easy reach of operator • Controls are plainly marked as to function • Lower controls can override lift controls • Except for emergencies, lower controls only operate with permission from worker(s) in lift

  7. Trained & Authorized Operators • Only operate lifts if trained and authorized • Understand operating instructions • Receive hands-on training • Know how to inspect equipment and work area • Demonstrate how to safely operate equipment

  8. Fall Protection (?) • Fall protection is NOT needed when lift is used properly as directed by the manufacturer • The guardrail system is the fall protection system • No guardrails are to be removed • Do not climb on or lean over rails • Use only on indoor, flat and level surfaces

  9. Fall Protection (if needed) • Fall protection would only be needed when lift is used outdoors or on bumpy, uneven flooring • Wear a full-body harness with a lanyard attached to the lift • Inspect fall protection equipment before use • Never tie-off to an adjacent structure • Lanyards will be kept with lift in Central Plant

  10. Equipment Inspections • Look for: • Cracked welds • Hydraulic leaks • Damaged control cables and loose connections • Tire damage • Perform control check and lift test • Report issues to Transportation for repairs

  11. Work Area Inspections • Look for: • Uneven floor levels • Bumps and floor obstructions • Debris • Overhead obstructions and high-voltage conductors

  12. Before Entering the Lift • Conduct inspections of lift and work area • Ensure load is within rated capacity • Make sure vehicle is on a solid surface • Designate employee to watch • Put the key switch on the Platform Control position • Make sure the Stop/Emergency buttons are deactivated • Put on hard hat (fall protection, if needed)

  13. Working in the Lift • Always stand firmly on the lift floor • Don’t sit or climb on the edge of the lift • Never use a ladder • Never use a plank between the lift and another surface as a work platform • Never lean over the edge of the rails or put your feet on the rails

  14. While Driving the Lift • Look in the direction of travel and keep a clear view of the path of travel • Watch out for nearby pedestrians • Maintain a safe distance from overhead obstructions • Limit travel speed to match conditions

  15. Driving Operations • Press right green button to select the driving function • The joystick enable lever must be pressed at all times for the lift to operate • Handle the joystick to control the driving of the vehicle • Travel speed is proportional and is controlled by the movement of the joystick • Release the joystick to stop the vehicle • Brake is automatic • Press black button to activate wheel blocking device, can travel in straight line only

Lifting/Lowering Operations • Press the left green button to select the lift/lower function • The joystick enable lever must be pressed at all times for the lift to operate • Push the joystick forward to lift the basket • Push the joystick backward to lower basket • Release the joystick to stop the vehicle

  18. Safe Work Practices • Keep at least 10 feet away from power lines • Report malfunctions immediately • Prevent ropes, cords, and hoses from entangling with lift • Before lowering the lift make sure the area underneath is clear • Always wear a hard hat while in the lift

  19. Remember • After using the lift make sure to plug the lift back in to recharge the batteries

  20. Summary • Lifts are useful but can also be hazardous • Only trained employees can operate the lift • Inspect equipment and the work area before each use • Understand and follow safe work practices, always wear a hard hat and wear fall protection as needed based on inspection of work area
