  1. US GOV: Objective 2 The student will demonstrate understanding by describing the six basic principals which the constitution of the United States is built.

  2. Popular Sovereignty • The power to rule lies with the people • The people of the USA get the power to rule from the Constitution

  3. Limited Government • a type of government in which its functions and powers are prescribed, limited, and restricted by law (The Constitution) • USA can only do what we tell it to do

  4. Separation of Powers The individual branches of government (executive, legislative, judicial) have separate and unique powers the others cannot impinge upon (3 Branches)

  5. Checks and Balances • limits imposed on all branches of a government by vesting in each branch the right to amend or void those acts of another that fall within its purview.

  6. Judicial Review • the power of a court to determine the constitutionality of the laws of a government or the acts of a government official • Marburyv. Madison

  7. Federalism • A system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units. • AKA: State and National Government

  8. IN YOUR GROUPS on note cards: On one note card define your term On 4-6 separate cards provide examples from the constitution or real life. Competition time…
