  6. Network • Marine Science Building • Washburn Lab • Siegel Lab • Noble Hall • King Lab

  7. Accounts • UNIX accounts • Assigned password • You can change your UNIX account password using Secure Shell Client or X-Windows • e.g., on latitude.geog.ucsb.edu, use yppasswd username and follow prompts • Don’t give it out to anyone • Forgot it? Visit Dylan for a new one (passwords never e-mailed out) • Persist as long as you are here

  8. Accounts • Good Password rules: • No common words on their own • Seven or more characters • Mixed upper/lower case • Other characters OK: ~!@#$%^&*()_-+=|,/. • Numbers shouldn’t replace obvious letters • Spaces not allowed (generally a bad idea in UNIX, anyway)

  9. Accounts • Class accounts • These are UNIX accounts. For instance, Jane Q. Doe taking Geography 184 would have an account named jqd184 • But, they expire quarterly/yearly • Useful for students’ class-related webpages • Disk storage reserved for class accounts – “keep area tidy”

  10. Accounts • E-mail accounts • username@geog.ucsb.edu • No web browser e-mail interface • E-mail profile • Change password, set forwarding and vacation message • Open http://mailhost.geog.ucsb.edu:8082 with Internet Explorer (not Firefox)

  11. Accounts • E-mail accounts (continued) • Incoming POP/IMAP server: mailhost.geog.ucsb.edu • Outgoing Geog network SMTP server: • sbox.geog.ucsb.edu • Otherwise use your local Internet service provider server • Spam filtering • Barracuda Networks hardware spam appliance • 90-95% of all e-mail we receive is spam • All UCSB computers are whitelisted, and therefore not filtered for spam • Adjust your settings: http://sbox.geog.ucsb.edu:8000

  12. Accounts • E-mail accounts (continued) • UCSB U-Mail: http://www.umail.ucsb.edu • E-Mail policies: • University of California Electronic Communications Policy: http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/policies/ec/ • UCSB Interim Electronic Communications Implementing Guidelines: http://www.policy.ucsb.edu/vcas/isc/InterimECImpGuide5612.pdf

  13. Labs/Classrooms • Access Control Keycard for entry • “Green-lighting” = the doors are unlocked during class times. • “Red-lighting” = the doors are locked and require access card (this is the default). • Keep doors closed; holding/propping them open sounds alarm, kills the “green-lighting” of the door. • Close windows/turn off lights if you are the last to leave/log off computers, push the chairs in, clean white-board (FYI: the windows are locked during the weekend). • If you are teaching/TAing a class, verify that podium is locked when you are done!

  14. Computer Labs • Star Lab • Access Control Keycard required outside of instruction times • Open 24/7 for grad students (as long as you can get into the building) • Open 24/5 for undergrads with approved access (without grad supervision) • HP LaserJet 5700dn duplex printer • UPS/surge protection • Computers • 36 Core 2 Duo CPU • Windows XP SP3 • Lots of software (see lab webpage for listing) • 22-inch LCD monitors

  15. Computer Labs • Descartes Lab • Access Control Keycard required outside of instruction times • Access for enrolled undergrads until 5 p.m. • Computers • 15 Sun Blade 100 workstations (Solaris 8) • 15 Shuttle XPC PCs (Windows XP SP3) • 20-inch LCD displays • Xerox Phaser 7760DX color printer

  16. Computer Labs • Lab Policies • Use common sense • No food, beverages, bikes, skateboards • Logoff computers before leaving • Surveillance cameras • Yield to incoming classes

  17. Department Resources • Printers • Star Lab: HP LaserJet 5700dn • Descartes Lab: Xerox Phaser 7760DX • Spatial@UCSB Lab: HP LaserJet 3000dtn • Ellison 5th floor: HP Color LaserJet 9050dtn • CHG 1st floor: HP LaserJet 2100dtn • 36-inch scanner (Ellison 3rd floor) • Wireless access using UCSBNetID

  18. Department Resources • Printers • The print management system charges print jobs to students’ BARC accounts. Print stations release jobs. • Color printing ($0.15) more expensive than monochrome ($0.10). • Classes you’ll teach/TA will have $50 accounts to charge to (500 pages monochrome). • For monochrome, best to make one print-out, and use the office copier (classes have charge codes) to make up the remainder. • UCSB Instructional Computing manages the billing and service. Geography manages the supplies.

  19. Department Resources • Mailing Lists • Official lists • allfaculty@geog • allgrad@geog • all@geog (goes to everyone except undergrads) • Private list • gradb@geog (private grad student list/forum only. You must send an e-mail to request@geog.ucsb.edu to be added to this list) • Bulletin Board Service • http://bbs.geog.ucsb.edu

  21. Campus Resources • Wireless • Need a UCSBnetID (which means you’ll need a UCSB-affiliated e-mail address beforehand to get one) • Select areas on campus; Geography classrooms, computing labs and conference rooms • https://noc.ucsb.edu/wireless/ • Once connected, Geography networks accessed via SSH/SFTP client programs, Windows Remote Desktop, Terminal Services, etc. • Library • Alexandria Digital Library • Map and Imagery Library (MIL) • Digital research journals • UCSB VPN Service • http://www.oit.ucsb.edu/network_services/VPN_service/default.asp • Windows and MacOS X clients

  22. What Services Do I Get? Core Services Provided Include: • Geography Department E-mail (username@geog.ucsb.edu) • Bulletin Board Service • GPS and field units for instructional use only • Wireless Access through UCSB OIT • One static, in-office, IP address per grad student • Network troubleshooting (at the switch, and wall-plate in) • Use of the Spatial@UCSB computing lab • Oracle UCSB CorporateTime Calendar account • Allowed to install ESRI products, Symantec anti-virus, and ENVI+IDL on University-owned machines (not your laptop).

  23. What Services Do I Get? Additional Services for Recharge: • Printing • Hardware troubleshooting for grant research-owned computers • Assistance with your own machines • Poster printing at the Institute for Quantum & Complex Dynamics (iQCD) at $40.00 per standard-sized poster

  24. Not a good idea to save stuff on the computers in the labs • Not a good idea to save non-academic material anywhere on the UNIX network • Geography Compute Team staff will not troubleshoot your hardware and software modifications to a machine supplied to you (e.g., iTunes, sound cards, unsanctioned freeware installations) • Additional hardware or software requests must be funded by your advisor’s grant funding source (e.g., Adobe, ERDAS, monitor(s), etc.) • Student passwords for Windows boxes in the labs • Security vigilance • Non-Geography enrolled students are not allowed in computing labs • Keep an eye your laptops and belongings

  25. Class web pages (webspace established by webmaster, content created by you and/or instructor, content managed by you and the webmaster). For example, Geography 5 class for Fall 2009: http://www.geog.ucsb.edu/classes/Geog5/F2009/ Personal web pages (content created & managed by you). Example: http://www.geog.ucsb.edu/~username Create public_html folder/directory username/public_html/index.htmlin UNIX equals http://www.geog.ucsb.edu/~username/index.htmlas a URL. Use SFTP/WinSCP/etc. to transfer content, and command line for management Map network drive in Windows Explorer using your UNIX account name and password Unencrypted passwords via Samba access Web Pages
