  3. Overall Purpose of STEP UP Grant Initiative • Attract and support tobacco studies scholars • Enhance and build curricular innovation in tobacco-related studies • Develop and support tobacco prevention and cessation projects within local communities

  4. Goals of STEP UP Programs • Increase the number and quality of graduate students and faculty in public health who specialize in tobacco studies • Better integrate tobacco-related issues into graduate public health education • Build a stronger infrastructure for tobacco-related education in schools of public health • Support more productive academic-practice linkages on tobacco issues through projects with communities of interest

  5. Workforce Needs for Reducing Tobacco Use • Tremendous progress over 40 years, but work is not done • Translation of tobacco control knowledge and research into practice • Addressing disparities in tobacco use, burden of disease and mortality • Core competencies for tobacco control plus… • Economics (win-win for health & business) • Bioethics (morality & social justice) • Pharmaceutics (old & new treatments) • Policy/Politics (grass roots & top down)

Pre-Doctoral/MPH Scholarship Programs • UNC SPH ~ PI Kurt Ribisl • Combined Pre-Doc and Doctoral programs in context of well-established tobacco course and research program • UCLA SPH ~ PI Barbara Berman • Combined Pre-Doc with new Curriculum development, existing research faculty • Program discontinued due to Clause 12 • UW SPHCM ~ PI Abigail Halperin • Built curriculum program first, then began Pre-Doc program; no pre-existing courses or research program

  7. Common Elements • Integration of scholars into new and existing courses • Provision of mentorship and research opportunities • Flexible funding to maximize number of students • Scholars required to complete practicum, thesis and/or community service in tobacco control • Conference attendance/presentations • Journal club or seminar/brown bag series

  8. Strengths of Programs • Building programs where none existed before or enhancement of existing programs • Integration of education, research and practice • Collaboration with community public health orgs • Attraction and funding of MPH/graduate students to pursue tobacco control • Total of 25 students funded! • Diverse group, reflective of population
