  1. Canola Research Initiative- Langdon Blackleg Emphasis Scott Halley – Crop Protection Scientist Luis del Rio Mendoza – Canola Pathologist Md Mukhlesur Rahman – Canola Breeder Sam Markell – Extension Pathologist Broadleaf Crops Jan Knodel – Extension Entomologist

  2. Presentation • Symptoms for determining blackleg disease • Canola research program at LREC Crop Protection Project • Yield and test weight results from NCGA funded blackleg studies • Results from spray volume application for white mold

  3. Blackleg Evaluation 0 No penetration or infection of stem.

  4. Blackleg Evaluation 1 1 = 1/4 of stem circumference; lesion superficial. Some discoloration

  5. Blackleg Evaluation 2 ½ of the stem circumference; some penetration

  6. Blackleg Evaluation 3 3/4 of the stem circumference; significant penetration

  7. Blackleg Evaluation 5 stem girdled at base, constricted, dry and brittle, may be completely severed; plant dead Interstate Seed provided the photographs for blackleg severity identification.

  8. Blackleg field Severity Evaluation • A value of less than one would indicate • Presence of non aggressive blackleg • Or poor conditions for infection or disease progression • A value of more than one indicates presence of aggressive blackleg. • A high value of 4 or 5 indicates • A sensitive variety • Or very intense inoculum pressure- short rotation with a lot of previous crop residue and good infection weather • Or presence of a new, more aggressive strain of blackleg

  9. 2011 Goals • Blackleg fungicide screens Fargo, Langdon and rural Cavalier County (grower’s field) • Blackleg timing study Fargo, Langdon and rural Cavalier County ( also in grower’s field) • Epidemiology study in grower’s field • Determine distance fungicide has to be applied on edge of field to protect from spore movement from adjacent field

  10. … continued • Determine if flea beetles affect blackleg in canola • Increased feeding – increased disease • Do they cause measureable transmission • Screen NDSU lines for breeding project – yield and disease resistance (blackleg and white mold)

  11. … continued • Fungicide screen for private company (blackleg) • Fungicide screen for private company (white mold) • Screened new chemistry • Doubled trial size and evaluated fungicide application at two spray volumes. • Seed treatment evaluations for private company (Rhizoctonia and Fusarium)

  12. Table 1. Yield and test weight at Langdon and Fargo by fungicide treatment on canola, 2011.

  13. Table 2. Yield and test weight at Langdon and Fargo by fungicide treatment and application timing for managing blackleg disease on canola, 2011. Sequential treatment included Headline twice at 6 fl. oz. /acre. Second application 7-10 days after initial application.

  14. Interaction data, Langdon

  15. White mold disease, yield and test weight by fungicide treatment and volume on canola, 2011.

  16. Additional Support • Febina Mathew • Scott Meyer • Susan Ruud • Amanda Arens • Patrick Beauzay
