  1. Fall wk 1 – Thus.30.Sept.04 • Welcome, roll, questions • Finish Debate Planning from yesterday • Introduction to Energy in Physics • Calculus is the language of physics • ConcepTests and Peer Instruction • CAL: HW on eGrade • Looking ahead Energy Systems, EJZ

  2. Finish debate planning • Groups report on question or statement to be debated • Draw for Pro or Con side • Tonight on WebX, each group should • create an online Discussion with your team’s • Topic = title • Debate statement or question • Names of Pro, Con, and Facilitator teams • Everyone’s phone number and email

  3. Intro to Energy in Physics • What sorts of Energy can you think of? • Discuss energy transformations and flows • Preview of physics description of energy • We’ll lay basics physics and calculus groundwork these first few weeks, then • We’ll dig into energy details starting week 4

  4. Calculus is the language of Physics • Precalculus review for the first two weeks • We’ll spend two weeks per chapter • First week: formal introduction to material, first HW • Second week: a little new material, second HW on same chapter • If you are ready for more challenge in calculus now: • Work ahead on homework first – is it quick and easy? • Then talk with Zita after class • Keep busy meanwhile by working harder problems from our text

  5. Calculus Ch.1 Precalculus review: Functions, including e and ln ConcepTests Introduce material  practice examples Strategy for doing homework (HW) and learning: • Skim text the first time • Come to class and start learning new material • Try all the problems independently • Read text more carefully to figure out problems • Bring questions to your team and to class • Finish HW independently (online)

  6. Calculus Ch.1: ConcepTests Goals: • Engage students directly in thinking about new material • Teach faculty where students are starting out • Practice articulating our developing understanding 15 seconds to pick an answer Quick vote 1 minute discussion with classmate Revote Discuss solutions

  7. Calculus Ch.1: Functions Functions describe relationships Domain = independent variable, range = dep ConcepTests 1-3 Ex: Crickets chirp faster when it’s warmer Interpreting graph Finding slope Equation for linear function ConcepTests 4-16, 20 Practice homework in teams Homework discussion

  8. Calculus Ch.1: Functions – cont’d Ex: Mexico’s population increased by 2.6% yr Graph, slope, equation Exponential function ConcepTests, HW practice 1.3: New functions from old: shift, stretch … Ex: Oil slick area depends on growing radius ConcepTests + HW practice Even and odd; Inverse functions ConcepTests + HW practice

  9. Calculus Ch.1 (let’s go to CAL) Homework due online next week: Calc 1 HW 1 Ch.1.1 # 4, 14, 30, 36 Ch.1.2 # 8, 18, 32, 36 Ch.1.3 # 2, 11, 20, 26 HW due the following week: Calc 1 HW 2 Ch.1.4 # 1, 14, 18, 26, 35 Ch.1.5 # 1, 14, 16, 20, 29, 31, 34, 36, 40 Ch.1.6 # 2, 4, 8, 14, 18, 23, 28 To access these, click Calc HW on our Schedule webpage.

  10. Looking ahead • Seminar in GCC tonight 5:00-6:30 • Learn WebX • Post your introduction • Form a preseminar team • Post your preseminar team’s info • Post your debate group’s info • Review essay guidelines • Friday: post your first 1-page essay on WebX • Next week: Read assignments before class • Meet teams • Post seminar PIQ • Post Energy PIQ • Do calculus 1 HW 1; we’ll continue Ch.1 next week
