  4. In approximately 95% of four year institutions there is some type of first year experience initiative. • Though the programs all differ there are consistent primary goals such as: student performance, persistence and graduation. • These goals are accomplished through integrating the student into the university setting academically and socially (Pascarella &Terenzini, 2005). Theoretical Foundation: • Evidence of the research suggests that students involved in an organized first year experience program report : • higher levels of satisfaction • involvement in campus activities • are more likely to be retained and graduate (Hunter & Linder, 2005) T

  5. Numerous studies support the positive impact of first year seminar courses (Barefoot, 2000). National survey of more than 1000 institutions identified the freshman seminar/university 101 course for credit as the number one ranked practice for having the greatest impact on student retention (Habley & McClanahan, 2004). Students participating in a FRSM 100 course persist to the fall term of their 2nd year at a higher rate (Hunter & Linder, 2005). Retention & Persistence J

  6. Possible reasons why students are not succeeding in college. • Understanding the amount of work required in various courses: we do not parcel out small amounts of work like in high school. Let us know how can we re-enforce this. • Students may not have learned to evaluate their own work critically and to develop high standards of quality. They may overestimate their ability to work at a high level. Let us know how can we re-enforce learning self evaluation. • Poor language skills: written and oral communication. Give us examples of writing intensive assignments, oral presentations and their frequency and weighting towards the final grade. • Does the only career discussion occurs in FRSM100? Many students may have chosen a field of study for the wrong reasons. Do the colleges discuss careers? How can we re-enforce this? T

  7. Discuss and analyze the FRSM 100 Learning Outcomes • Examine how the LO could be embedded into projects and activities in other courses • Seek suggestions from participants on how to improve the FRSM 100 course: • a) What do you want first year students to know about DU? • b) What skills can be taught in FRSM 100 that will better serve the student in your upper level courses? • c) What can we offer our first year students to aid in their retention? Session Objective J

  8. Evaluate abilities and interests to choose a majorand a career. Demonstrate competence in effective researching and evaluating a profession. Design career goals and education plans. Evaluate learning styles and apply strategies for success. Employ academic skills and techniques for successful university work and career preparation. Assess the factors for positive relationships, including listening skills, self-concept, nonverbal communication, and conflict resolution. Identify the location and value of campus resources. 11. Audience Participation TELL US: What do you think new students should know about DU? J

  12. Audience Participation Give us specific examples how the academic skills are emphasized in your courses. These skills should not stand alone in FRSM 100. T

  13. First Year Experience (FYE) J

  14. FRSM100 should not be a tree standing alone. We want to connect it to all aspects of the University. J

  15. Thank you for helping us to integrate FRSM 100 across the curriculum.
