Community Diversity 101The U.S has a history of welcoming refugees. Communities who invest in Refugees invest in themselves. Integration should be at the heart of refugee resettlement. Building partnerships between refugees and communities motivates refugees to become engaged citizens.

Community Diversity 101Why do Refugees leave their homelands? • As long as there have been wars, persecution, discrimination, and intolerance, there have been refugees. • Refugees resettled in the U.S. are not a • a burden on the U.S. They bring a • wealth of knowledge and • experience. • Famous Refugees: • Albert Einstein • Germany
Community Diversity 101Why do Refugees leave their homelands? • What would you do right now if bombs were falling around you? • What would you do if people of your faith or ethnic group were being singled out, tortured, and slaughtered? • Most refugees are forced to flee because they fear for their lives, freedom, and physical safety. A refugee is a person who "owing to a fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political beliefs, membership of a particular social groupis unable to find protection in the country of residence.” Article 1, The 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees Most refugees want to return to their countries of origin where they speak the language and have land, homes, families, and friends. Community Diversity 101How can we help? Goals Increase community outreach. Connect refugees with businesses and jobs. Establish refugee medical services. Collaborate with churches and schools for ride share, food share, and adult education programs. Increase the number of volunteers who will teach, tutor English, other subjects, and develop a language bank. At this event everyone can sign up at the Stations to get involved.
