  1. GET A BETTER CATALOG! Marshall Breeding Director for Innovative Technology and Research Vanderbilt University Library Founder and Publisher, Library Technology Guides http://www.librarytechnology.org/ http://twitter.com/mbreeding Next-Generation Discovery Interfaces for Library OPACs Feb 17, 2011 LibraryLinkNJ Webinar

  2. Abstract • Marshall Breeding, leading international expert on Integrated Library Systems (ILSs), will provide an overview of discovery interfaces, a new type of product that enhances the user experience of the OPAC. He will give an introduction to the products, sharing why they are needed and how they differ from--and often improve upon--standard ILS online catalog modules. The presentation will outline some of the features and how they better meet the expectations of today’s library patrons. Mr. Breeding will also broadly describe how discovery interfaces integrate with ILSs and other components of a library's technical infrastructure. The session will include some live examples of the major products available. There will be time for Q&A with Mr. Breeding.

  4. New models of Library Collection Discovery From OPACs to local, social, and Web-scale discovery

  5. Evolution of library collection discovery tools • Bound handwritten catalogs • Card Catalogs • Library online catalogs – OPACs • Next-Gen Catalogs / Discovery interfaces • Social Discovery • Web-scale discovery services • Comprehensive presentation layer services

  13. Online Catalog ILS Data Search: Search Results

  14. Web-based online catalog

  15. Disjointed approach to information and service delivery • Silos Prevail • Books: Library OPAC (ILS module) • Articles: Aggregated content products, e-journal collections • OpenURL linking services • E-journal finding aids (Often managed by link resolver) • Subject guides (e.g. SpringshareLibGuides) • Local digital collections • ETDs, photos, rich media collections • Metasearch engines • All searched separately

  16. Federated Search • Simultaneous search of library catalog and selected remote resources of electronic content • Based on live, dynamic queries cast to multiple targets • Limited result sets, slow performance • Search and retrieval protocols: Z39.50, XML gateways

  17. Federated Search products • Ex Libris: MetaLib • WebFeat • Serials Solutions: 360 Search • Innovative Interfaces: Research Pro

  18. Federated Search ILS Data Digital Collections Search: ProQuest Search Results EBSCOhost … MLA Bibliography ABC-CLIO Real-time query and responses

  19. Modernized Interface • Single search box • Query tools • Did you mean • Type-ahead • Relevance ranked results • Faceted navigation • Enhanced visual displays • Cover art • Summaries, reviews, • Recommendation services

  21. Extensibility Interoperability Allows the LMS to connect with other automation components Create a matrix of interconnected systems rather than isolated silos with redundant data and functionality LMS maturity means similar levels of functionality LMS products increasingly differentiated by extent and quality of APIs and interoperability support Benefits of APIs to Libraries

  33. Differentiation in Discovery • Products increasingly specialized between public and academic libraries • Public libraries: emphasis on engagement with physical collection • Academic libraries: concern for discovery of heterogeneous material types, especially books + articles + digital objects

  34. Discovery from Local to Web-scale • Initial products focused on technology • AquaBrowser, Endeca,Primo, Encore,VuFind • Mostly locally-installed software • Current phase focused on pre-populated indexes that aim to deliver Web-scale discovery • Summon (Serials Solutions) • WorldCat Local (OCLC) • EBSCO Discovery Service (EBSCO) • Primo Central • Encore with Article Integration

  35. Web-scale Discovery ILS Data Digital Collections Search: ProQuest EBSCOhost Search Results Consolidated Index … MLA Bibliography ABC-CLIO Pre-built harvesting and indexing

  36. State-wide Discovery ILS Data Vanderbilt Digital Collections Search: EBSCO ILS Data: Nashville Public Search Results Consolidated Index … ILS Data: UTK ILS Data: Tinn-Share Pre-built harvesting and indexing

  37. Web-scale Search + Federated Search ILS Data Digital Collections Search: ProQuest … Consolidated Index Search Results MLA Bibliography ABC-CLIO Pre-built harvesting and indexing FedSearch Non-harvestable Resources Interim model to deal with resources not possible to harvest into consolidated index

  38. Pre-populated discovery services • New-generation interface • Harvested local content • ILS metadata • Institutional repositories, ETDs, Digital Collection platforms • Vendor-supplied indexes of library content • E-journals, databases, e-books • Full-text and metadata corresponding to e-content subscriptions • Book collections beyond local library collections

  39. Web-scale search Competitors • Serials Solutions • Summon • EBSCO Publishing • EBSCO Discovery Service • Ex Libris • Primo Central • OCLC • WorldCat Local

  48. Social Discovery • Builds on modernized library catalog interfaces • Strong emphasis on Web 2.0 concepts • Users invited to contribute reviews, ratings, preferences, reading lists, etc. • User-supplied data becomes part of the discovery process • Users help each other to find interesting library materials • Example: Leverage use data for a recommendation service of scholarly content based on link resolver data: Ex LibrisbX service
