  2. Think About It … • What are different reasons for obeying the speed limits? • We have a variety of motivations for all the things we do – we want to do something or we feel we are forced to do it. • Today  we look at Jesus teaching of obeying Him with right motives.

  3. Listen for how Jesus describes motivations for why people do things. Matthew 6:1-4 (NIV) "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. [2] "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be

  4. Listen for how Jesus describes motivations for why people do things. honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. [3] But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, [4] so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

  5. When You Give • According to Jesus, how did some people let others know of their good deeds? • What are some bad motives for practicing acts of righteousness in front of people? • What might be some good motives for doing acts of righteousness in front of people? • According to Jesus, why does our motivation for living righteously matter?

  6.  Become aware of how your giving through our church supports different ministries • Local outreach • Foreign missionaries • Seminaries, Bible colleges (both in America and overseas) • Disaster relief ministries When You Give • What would be some ways in which you could use your time and resources to help others with few if any people knowing? • What is the reward to each of the people below when we give with pure motives?

  7. Listen for how Jesus’ teachings on prayer differ from practices of the pagans. Matthew 6:5-13 (NIV) "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. [6] But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.

  8. Listen for how Jesus’ teachings on prayer differ from practices of the pagans. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. [7] And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. [8] Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. [9] "This, then, is how you should pray: "

  9. Listen for how Jesus’ teachings on prayer differ from practices of the pagans. 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, [10] your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. [11] Give us today our daily bread. [12] Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'

  10. When You Pray • According to this passage, how do the hypocrites pray? • How does Jesus suggest that we pray? • How do the pagans pray?  Repetition or perseverance in prayer is not wrong … meaningless chatter is wrong.

  11. When You Pray • How can we keep prayer from being “babble.” • Jesus says “your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.” Why then should we pray? • Why do you think Jesus stressed praying in secret? • Jesus said pray “like this.” What do you think he meant?

  12. When You Fast • What are some reasons you deny yourself something? • Fasting is denying yourself food or other normal pleasures to spend time with God. • Listen for the warnings Jesus gives about the wrong way to fast.

  13. Listen for the warnings Jesus gives about the wrong way to fast. Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV) "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. [17] But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, [18] so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

  14. When You Fast • Consider the purposes of fasting … According to Jesus, what are the dos and don’ts of fasting? • What is the wrong way to fast? • What is the right way to fast?  In all our spiritual activities we are not to participate in order to impress others  We should act to please God first and foremost

  15. Application • The primary purpose of our acts of righteousness and worship are to bring glory to God • Acts of kindness toward others in the name of Jesus are to be for the sake of those in need and are to honor God the Father • Ask God to help you have the right motives when you minister to others

  16. Application • Prayer is personal communication between an individual and God the Father • The Model Prayer (also called the Lord’s Prayer) provides a structure for praying that includes Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplications … A.C.T.S. • As you pray this week, pattern your prayer after Jesus’ example

  17. Application • Even as Christians, our religious activity must be sincere if it is to express true worship to God • What activities can you set aside in order to seek to know God better? • What kinds of things might be preventing you from maturing in your relationship with God?
