  2. Good Morning! • Bellwork: Journals- Christmas Senses!!!! Get brainstorming. • Three are due for this assignment. • One is winter • One is general Christmas • One is a specific aspect of Christmas

  3. Good Morning! • You have 10 minutes to write a story using the first 5 vocabulary words we have learned. • Writing about this fabulous weather is one idea! • Please use imagery to accompany your story. • Please be silent to make me happy and not ruin my happy Christmas mood!

  4. Savvy • Savvy (n/adj.):practical understanding; know-how, intelligence; common sense • The mechanic had technological savvy. • (No other derivatives).

  5. Unfathomable • Unfathomable (adj):Difficult or impossible to understand; incomprehensible • The little girl gaped at the unfathomable fighting of her parents. • Fathom- verb (antonym) • I could not fathom how Bo studied for 12 hours, yet he still failed the test.

  6. Wince • wince:(v) to flinch or draw back, usually from pain, embarrassment or shock; to flinch - I winced when my little sister played the tape she had made of me singing in the shower. - Joe winced as the nurse approached me with a tray of needles for the allergy test.

  7. Vague • Vague (adj): Not clear, not definite or distinct. • I knew the material for the test but the vague questions threw me off. • Derivatives: vaguely (adv.)

  8. Incredulous • incredulous:(adj) disbelieving; skeptical - Dally had an incredulous look on his face when Johnny talked back to him. Derivative- (n.) incredulity

  10. Rebellious • 1. adj. Showing a desire to resist authority, control, or convention. • Her rebellious ways caused her to not be trusted by anyone. Derivatives: Noun: rebellion- The rebellion she caused was unnecessary. Verb: She rebelled against her mother’s words.

  11. Nonchalant • Adj - Seeming to be coolly unconcerned or indifferent. • She faced the crowd with the nonchalantease of an experienced speaker. Derivatives: Adv.- nonchalantly- After getting an “A” on the exam, rather than jump for joy, Bill nonchalantly returned to his seat. Noun- nonchalance- Nancy’s nonchalance works in her favor when she is acting.

  12. Dumbfounded Derivatives: Verb: Dumbfound- Carl dumbfounded me when he said he was moving away. Adv.- Dumbfoundingly- The elves dumbfoundingly rushed in making toys after Santa changed the date of Christmas to December 10th. • Adj.- in the state of confusion or bewilderment. • I answered each question with confidence, but I was dumbfounded by the last one.

  13. Aloofness • Aloofness (noun): the state of being distant or uninvolved. • Her aloofness from her peers raised a red flag that Terry was lonely. • Derivatives: • Adj.- aloof- Sara acts aloof in school, but on weekends, she’s a crazy nut!

  14. Elite • Noun- a superior, powerful group • The Kardashians may be considered the elite of the celebrity world. Derivatives: Adj.- Elite and powerful, the ivy league university, Harvard, only accepts 2% of its applicants.

  15. Gallant • Gallant (Adj.): brave, spirited, noble-minded, or chivalrous • The boy was being idiotic when he ran across the highway to show off But, he was being gallant when he admitted to spitting the spitball so that his friend would not get in trouble.

  16. Delirious • delirious (adj.) : wild with excitement, enthusiasm • The little children ran in circles, delirious under the rain.

  17. Contempt • contempt (n): the feeling with which a person regards anything considered mean, vile, or worthless; disdain; scorn. • I truly wished to scrape his contemptuous sneer off his face.

  18. Mimicking • Mimicking (v): to imitate or copy in action, speech, etc., often playfully or derisively. • I glared at the stupid mimicking parrot

  19. Radiates • Radiate (v): to send out rays or waves, to emit • The family in the zoo radiated all the happiness and contentment of the world.

  20. Indignant • Indignant (Adj.): feeling, characterized by, or expressing strong displeasure at something considered unjust, offensive, insulting, or base • The high spirited girl indignantly scoffed at the petty girls.
