  1. Site Planning Planning 1 M.S.Chua

  2. What is site planning? • The art of arranging structures on the land and shaping the spaces between; an art linked to architecture, engineering, landscape architecture and city planning. (Kevin Lynch) • The art and science of arranging the uses of portions of land. These uses are designated in detail by selecting and analyzing sites, forming land use plans, organizing vehicular and pedestrian circulation, developing visual formand material concepts, readjusting the existing landforms by design grading, providing proper drainage, and developing the construction details necessary to carry out the projects. (Harvey M. Rubenstein)

  3. Methods of establishing a site • Site selection process – selecting a site that best suits the given use and requirements of the project; • Development suitability process – selecting the best use and development suited for a given site.

  4. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Natural Factors • Cultural Factors • Aesthetic Factors

  5. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Natural Factors Geology • The natural science that studies the earth – its composition; the process that shaped its surface; and its history. -Igneous Rocks -Sedimentary Rocks -Metamorphosed Rocks Image Source: http://skywalker.cochise.edu/wellerr/6basalt-bomb7-29a.jpg

  6. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Natural Factors Geomorphology • The branch of geology that deals with the origin, nature, and distribution of landforms. - Physiography – refers to the description of landforms - Landforms – Irregularities on the earth’s surface, derived from volcanic, glacial, or erosion process. 7. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Natural Factors Hydrology • The natural science that studies waters on earth, their occurrence and distribution, their chemical and physical properties, and their reaction to the living environment including their relation to all living things. -Hydrologic cycle – the movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the continents and back to the sea. -Water table – the upper boundary of the zone of groundwater; the top of unconfined aquifer. 8. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Natural Factors Vegetation • The relevance of plant materials in planning are: - Climatic control - Environmental Engineering - Architectural and Aesthetic uses Image Source: http://cdn.freshome.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Lush-Vegetation.jpg

  9. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Natural Factors Wildlife • Relates closely to habitats provided by plant communities. - Openland wildlife - Woodland wildlife - Wetland wildlife Image Source: http://gallery.tripsiders.com/var/albums/Places/Philippine%20Eagle.jpg?m=1359042788

  10. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Natural Factors Climate • conditions of the atmosphere at a particular location over a long period of time; it is the long-term summation of the atmospheric elements (and their variations) that, over short time periods, constitute weather. - Solar orientation - Best-facing slopes - Wind flows Image Source: http://ccir.ciesin.columbia.edu/nyc/images/1a_Fig1.gif

  11. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Cultural Factors Existing land use Image Source: http://townhall.townofchapelhill.org/agendas/2007/05/07/2a/2a-map3_study_area_with_land_use_plan.gif

  12. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Cultural Factors Traffic and transit systems Image Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/sites/straitstimes.com/files/20131118/MrtBusFaresSTSS181113e.jpg

  13. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Cultural Factors Density and zoning Image Source: http://cookbook.hlurb.gov.ph/files/images/Pateros%20PopDensity.jpg

  17. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Aesthetic Factors Natural features • Can be natural asset of the land Image Source: http://th04.deviantart.net/fs30/PRE/i/2009/068/2/7/Typhoon_Lagoon_10_by_Disney_Stock.jpg

  18. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Aesthetic Factors Spatial patterns • The site’s configuration according to the arrangement of elements Image Source: http://ctrebprofessionals.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/global_city_map2.jpg

  19. Factors involved in the study of site analysis • Aesthetic Factors Visual resources - View – a scene observed from a vantage point - Vista – a confined view, usually directed toward a terminal or dominant feature.
