  1. The Art of Successful Pitching A National Perspective Hardy Spire, Executive Director, GOLIN

  2. Lay the groundwork when you don’t have a story to pitch • Provide resources: data, contact information, storyline ideas • Treat reporters like partners, not customers • A little (more) conversation leads to coverage: talk it through Relationship Building

  3. Personal stories work at the local and national level • Look at your story objectively. If I lived in another state would I care? Do a gut check. Phone a friend. • Power in numbers: combine your story with similar ones from other markets • Use APTA as a resource for story crafting and connecting (Meet Virginia Miller, director of media relations!) How to Get National Coverage

  4. Put key details and visual elements in your email – you may get just one shot – but don’t overdo it • Pull together local coverage to share with a national reporter or producer • Produce your own story for social media to show a reporter what it can look like Package Your Idea

  5. CBS Newspath: will take pitches directly newspathdesk@cbs.com • NBC News Channel: will take direct pitches for medical or consumer news but prefer to rely on affiliates. 704-733-6262 & ask for the news desk • ABC NewsOne: will take pitches directly regionaldesk@abc.com • CNN Newsource: will take news tips 404-827-1500 • Fox NewsEdge: prefer to rely on affiliates, but specific stories can be directed to specific producers (business, health) 212-301-3444 Skip the Middleman: Network News Feeds
