  1. Test Monitoring Center Reportto theMack Test Surveillance Panel January 23, 2007 San Antonio, TX

  2. Reference Oil Testing Summary • T-8 Test Activity • Very Low • 1 calibrated lab • 2 calibrated stands • Issue: Lab(s) now without reference oil!!

  3. T-8 Reference Oil Issue • Options (assuming the T-8 must live) • Use T-11 as a replacement • slow to develop and not much energy so far • Voluntarily re-distribute remaining 1004-3 • has already been requested • success far from certain and can’t be forced • Get a different reference oil • 1005-2 most likely the best fit

  4. TMC 1005-2 as T-8 Reference Oil • Positives • Five T-8 test results on 1005 • Plenty 1005-2 available • Labs would be able to run immediately

  5. TMC 1005-2 as T-8 Reference Oil • Negatives • Data is old (9 years) • Data is on a previous blend • Data is incomplete • Relative Viscosity (100% Shear) data doesn’t exist • Causes problems determining SAs (but not calibration status)

  6. TMC 1005-2 as T-8 Reference Oil • Possibilities • Targets • VI38 (mean & stdev) = 5.85 & 0.72 • RV48 (mean & stdev) = 2.09 & 0.15 • RV2 - none • Control Charts • Suggest temporary expansion of Shewhart K to 2.00 until five tests • Either suspend or freeze current RV2 SAs

  7. Reference Oil Testing Summary • T-11 Test Activity • Moderate • 5 calibrated labs • 6 calibrated stands • Oil 820-3 has been introduced • More on this in a few moments

  8. T-11 Correction Factors – Soot and MRV • T-11 Top Ring Change in May ’05 • Total of 34 tests • 30 tests on 820-2 • 4 tests on 820-3 • Current CFs were set at 20 tests on new hardware (oil 820-2)

  9. T-11 Correction Factors

  10. T-11 Correction Factors • Do we update (and possibly freeze) the correction factors for Soot at 12 cSt and MRV based on 30 tests?

  11. T-11 Reference Oil Update • TMC 820-3 has been introduced • 4 tests • 3 passes, 1 fail (very mild on Soot at 12) • TMC will update as data comes in • No new tests expected until April

  12. T-11 Reference Oil Update

  13. Reference Oil Testing Summary • T-12 Test Activity • Low • 6 calibrated labs • 9 calibrated stands • Test targets nearing update (n = 19) • Sure to require significant discussion

  14. Mack SP Items for Consideration • T-8 & T-11 Fuel Sulfur Measurements • QC measurements (not fuel spec sheet) • D 129 “or equivalent” (Sept. ’05) • not specific enough, undefined • D 129, D2622, D 4294, or D 5453 • under consideration? • if no action, then D 129 only

  15. Mack SP Items for Consideration • T-12 Piston Deposits • Currently mandatory • originally asked for in case C13 was a no-go • Mack SP voted to remove (3-1-9) • Change generates an Information Letter • Negative must be addressed before change is effective

  16. Mack SP Items for Consideration • T-11 New Stand Definition (Sect. 11.4) • Time limit • Currently shown as one year from cal test • Conflicts with: • Meeting minutes (Feb. ’05) and LTMS doc • Suspect clerical error • Suggest change to “one year from cal expiration”

  17. Mack SP Items for Consideration • T-11 Soot Calculations • Soot at 4, 12, and 15 cSt • Linear Interpolation • NOT specified in Section 11.6

  18. Mack SP Items for Consideration • T-11 Soot Calculations • Current • 11.6 Test Results—The test results are Soot Content at 4 cSt Viscosity Increase (%), Soot Content at 12 cSt Viscosity Increase (%), Soot Content at 15 cSt Viscosity Increase (%), and MRV Viscosity (cP)

  19. Mack SP Items for Consideration • T-11 Soot Calculations • Suggested Fix • 11.6 Test Results—The test results are Soot Content at 4 cSt Viscosity Increase (%), Soot Content at 12 cSt Viscosity Increase (%), Soot Content at 15 cSt Viscosity Increase (%), and MRV Viscosity (cP). • 11.6.1 Use linear interpolation for calculating soot contents (at a given viscosity increase), using new oil 90-pass DIN shear viscosity result as the minimum viscosity (sections 10.1.1 and 10.1.5) • Renumber following sections as appropriate (11.6.1 to 11.6.2).

  20. Action Item Update • T-12 to T-10 Merit Calculation • JAC asked to investigate where this should live • Answer: T-12 test method • BUT!!! • not until ballot clears Sub. B • Reports forms already updated
