  1. Building on the Rock 9/12/2018 The Gap Baptist Church

  2. The Wise and Foolish Builders • Matt 7:24-27  24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

  3. Kids Version

  4. Commonly interpreted as simply… • A story about salvation… Christians versus non Christians… Give your life to Jesus and you will be saved… or is it?

  5. Take two… • Luke 6:46-49  46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

  6. A treatise on building House Foundation or pillars Architect and Builder Sand Bed rock

  7. God as Architect and Builder

  8. Abraham, man of faith… • Hebrews 11:9-11  9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. Abraham knew that God was both Architect and Builder

  9. God as Rock

  10. Who is the Rock? • Genesis 49:24-25 24 But his bow remained steady,    his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,    because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, • Psalm 18 similarly, 2 Samuel 22 2The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,    my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 46 The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!    Exalted be God my Saviour!

  11. Rocks and rocks • Deuteronomy 32  32 Listen, you heavens, and I will speak;    hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.2 Let my teaching fall like rain    and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass,    like abundant rain on tender plants. 3 I will proclaim the name of the Lord.    Oh, praise the greatness of our God!4 He is the Rock, his works are perfect,    and all his ways are just.A faithful God who does no wrong,    upright and just is he. 15 Jeshurun grew fat and kicked;    filled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them    and rejected the Rock their Saviour. 18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;    you forgot the God who gave you birth. 28 They are a nation without sense,    there is no discernment in them.29 If only they were wise and would understand this    and discern what their end will be!30 How could one man chase a thousand,    or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them,    unless the Lord had given them up?31 For their rock is not like our Rock,    as even our enemies concede.32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom    and from the fields of Gomorrah.Their grapes are filled with poison,    and their clusters with bitterness.33 Their wine is the venom of serpents,    the deadly poison of cobras.

  12. Are there other Rocks? • Isaiah 44:8  • 8 Do not tremble, do not be afraid.    Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago?You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me?No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.”

  13. Ancient of days… • Psalm 78:19-25  19 They spoke against God;    they said, “Can God really    spread a table in the wilderness?20 True, he struck the rock,    and water gushed out,    streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread?    Can he supply meat for his people?”21 When the Lord heard them, he was furious;    his fire broke out against Jacob,    and his wrath rose against Israel,22 for they did not believe in God    or trust in his deliverance.23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above    and opened the doors of the heavens;24 he rained down manna for the people to eat,    he gave them the grain of heaven.25 Human beings ate the bread of angels;    he sent them all the food they could eat.

  14. Same today… • 1 Corinthians 10:3-4  3 They all ate the same spiritual food4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

  15. Jesus as the cut rock – New Kingdom • Daniel 2:34-45  34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth. 44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. “The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

  16. What’s the sand? • The sand is the noise of the world… that that prevents you from simply being in touch with God. • It’s unstable and changing… • 3 easy steps to raising your children • 5 minute abs • The 4 hour work week • Get rich quick • Not necessarily all bad, and some worth reading, but shouldn’t be your foundation for decision making.

  17. Biblical Teachings as Foundation

  18. God sets the foundation and claims his elect • 2 Timothy 2:19  19 Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” • Relates to Rev. Garry’s recent sermons from James on faith and works… If you are going to drill down into the rock your roots will (MUST) bear fruits

  19. The church as foundation • 1 Timothy 3:14-16  14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.

  20. Practical foundations • Spiritual growth – reading, prayer • Education – informal, structured and mentoring • Career – planning, behaviour • Finances – budgeting, spending, tithing • Marriage – mate selection, maintenance (aka romance) • Relationships – children, friends, family, church Drill down into the Rock when laying any foundation – Foundations on sand are those that collapse

  21. What is the value of a foundation? • Foundations are principles aligned with the cornerstone • Get them wrong and every brick built into the house (every action or decision) will take it closer to collapse. • Get them right and it will take a couple of rows of bad bricks (bad actions or decisions) to compromise the house. • Follow the latest craze on raising children and you are on unstable sand… raise you children on biblical principles and you will tend to make better decisions when placing each brick in your life… you’ll still get it wrong every now and then, but the foundation will hold it up. • This holds true for relationships with your spouse, how you treat your career and perform in your job, how you choose where and when and on what to spend your money.

  22. The cost of building the foundation • Luke 14:25-35  25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’ • Make sure you can finish what you start – there is a cost

  23. Adding to the foundation – Make sure you are on Rock • 1 Corinthians 3:10-15  10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care.11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

  24. Jesus as cornerstone and foundation, embellished by apostles and prophets • Ephesians 2:19-21  19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.

  25. Jesus as foundation cornerstone • Isaiah 28:16  16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone,a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;the one who relies on it    will never be stricken with panic. • Isaiah 33:6  6 He will be the sure foundation for your times,    a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge;    the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure. The cornerstone is the reference for all foundational elements. If Christ is the reference the added elements will have a much better chance of being true and sound. Foundations are the teachings of Jesus and the word of God in scripture. If the teaching is aligned with the cornerstone it will be true and it will glue you to the rock. If it is not aligned it will be false and will fail when the load from the house puts it under pressure.

  26. Both cornerstone and stumbling block • 1 Peter 2:6-10  6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion,    a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him    will never be put to shame.” 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected    has become the cornerstone,” 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble    and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.

  27. Make or break… • Matthew 21:42-44  42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone the builders rejected    has become the cornerstone;the Lord has done this,    and it is marvellous in our eyes’? 43 “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. 44 Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”

  28. No other basis for foundation… • Acts 4:10-15  10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected,    which has become the cornerstone.’ 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

  29. House • This is the life God planned for you as architect and creator… For some it is a small, simple home For some it is a mansion Neither is wrong… Whatever you build, build it to the glory of God on Christ as Foundation securing yourself to the Rock

  30. Summary • I don’t believe the foolish man was any different to us. He heard the message and wanted to build his house, but where he failed (as we generally do too), was to dig down through the sand (the rubbish the world feeds us) and into the secure bedrock. • He was too lazy, arrogant or foolish to realise that it would take commitment, hard word and understanding to be able to secure himself to the Rock • When hard times hit – job losses, health issues, relationship problems, sorrow, disappointment – if we have built on sand, our foundations will be flawed, if we haven’t aligned them with the reference cornerstone, they will be skew, and the house we have built will be washed away – we will still be saved, but our foolishness of not paying attention to Christ’s message and basing everything we think and do on those teachings will cost us the house we have built. • If we have built on the Rock, we will still go through the same storms, we won’t be any less subject to the buffeting rain and wind, but our house will stand because it’s foundations hold their attachment to the immovable Rock. • Don’t think your house is safe just because you once made a commitment to the Rock… have you dug deep and laid solid foundations in all aspects of life, your home, on the Rock?
