  3. AKA Battle of Ardennes Forrest • Forrest was thick and Allies were unexpecting • Hitler picked the weakest point of Allies defense (Western Front) • Through Ardennes Forrest where the border of Belgium and Luxemburg are

  4. Hitlers Goals • Split up Allies (Brits and US) • Cut off Antwerp • With 250,000 soldiers • Element of surprise • Panzer Divisions • DECEMBER 16, 1944 attack begins

  5. Brutal Battle • Neither armies were prepared, men froze to death • One of WWII’s biggest and bloodiest battles • Allies were outnumbered 10:1 so Eisenhower called in 250,000 more men • Hoped to close “bulge”

So What happened? • As weather improved the Allies regained land • Air Force attacked and dropped supplies • German offensive runs out of fuel and men (success only lasts 2 days) • 80,000 US troops either wounded, killed or captured vsGerman 100,000 • Jan 25, 1945 Allies Victory!!! • Within four months, Germany surrenders
