  2. Misconception: What We Believe: Catholics are not actually Christians. Catholics profess: “I believe in Jesus Christ. . .“ Catholics were the first Christians.

  3. The Nicene Creed (Dogma from 325 AD) • , I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only begotten Son of God born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, True God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

  4. Nicene Creed, continued.. . For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come, Amen.

  11. Misconception: What We Believe: Catholics crucify Jesus every time they have Mass. Catholics commemorate the events of the Paschal Mystery - the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus when we celebrate the Mass

  12. Misconception: What We Believe: Catholics perform rituals that they believe work like magic. Catholics ritualize the sacred events instituted by Christ which are called the seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, Matrimony

  13. Misconception: What We Believe: Catholics believe that they can sin all they want because they can just go to confession and be forgiven. . Catholics believe that we are all called by God to lead lives that are morally exemplary and are given the sacrament of penanceto help us remain on the path toward wholeness/holiness

  14. Misconception: What We Believe: The Catholic Church is rich and doesn't care about the poor. The Catholic Church teaches the preferential option for the poor and leads the world in actions of social justice.

  15. Misconception: What We Believe: Catholics don't do anything unless the Church says so. Catholics believe that teaching authority has been given to the Church by Christ ( called the Magisterium) and hold what the Church teaches in the highest esteem.

  16. Misconception: What We Believe: Catholics worship Mary and the saints. Catholics honor Mary and the saints and ask them to pray with us for ourselves and others. Catholics believe we are connected mystically in what is called "the communion of saints."
