  1. The aim of EXATED is to realise the vision of a new scalable network architecture supporting the challenging requirements of future wireless communication systems and providing secure energy-efficient, and cost-effective machine-to-machine (M2M) communications suitable for low end devices. Work Approach • Identifying use cases, scenarios, technicalrequirements, and business models (WP2). • Specification of LTE-M, extension to LTE for M2M devices. Backward compatible to LTE Rel.8 (WP3). • E2E M2M system. Definition of packet data protocols between LTE-M and capillary networks, IP networking, device management, traffic aggregation and network monitoring (WP4). • Definition of low cost automated authentication and device provisioning solutions for efficient and secure M2M communications over LTE network (WP5). • Implementation techniques for power efficiency, reliability and secure M2M devices with self diagnostic feature while considering benefits of LTE-M access network (WP6). • Integration and proof of concepts. Validation of the EXALTED concepts for the prioritized use cases and scenarios (WP7). Expected Impacts Research Areas Key Technologies • LTE-M: extending the scalability of the LTE architecture up to very cost sensitive “mobile narrow band applications” and supporting efficient M2M communication with wide area coverage • Advanced mobile networking capabilities that will establish a comprehensive end-to-end (E2E) architecture for M2M systems as a stepping stone towards Future Internet of Things • Low cost automated security and provisioning solutions for M2M over LTE • Device improvement enabling enhanced autonomy in the scope of M2M services. • Accelerate the development of M2M communications in combination with broadband wireless access systems, hence strengthening the position of the European industry as supplier for advanced communication infrastructure. • Trigger enhanced M2M applications in health care, industrial processes, and remote monitoring, as well as enable new business opportunities • Use the results to shape the development of standardisation of M2M communications in 3GPP, ETSI M2M, and other forums. • Develop key technical features. • PHY&MAC layer: • Integration of wireless M2M communications into existing cellular communication systems • Low complexity PHY and MAC algorithms to match low end M2M systems: traffic aggregation, adaptive MAC scheduling, etc. • Interworking: • 6LowPan packet footprint for LTE bearers • Heterogeneous network access management • Mobility protocols at network or transport levels • Reduced mobility concept • IP networking for M2M communications • Device management and optimization: • Self organising and healing operations • Heterogeneous traffic support • Energy efficient operations • Security and provisioning: • M2M applications in networked secure devices • Security in relaying networks 13 Partners from 6 Countries This work has been performed in the framework of the ICT project ICT-5-258512 EXALTED, whichispartlyfunded by the European Union. The organisations on the source listwouldlike to acknowledge the contributions of theircolleagues to the project.
