  1. Character sketches At the end of this tutorial you will understand how to fill in the character sketch section in the novel packet and you will get a better understanding of why it is important to think of many different aspects of a character in a story.

  2. What does it look like in the packet? Use a quote from the character in the story that explains something about them. Actions means what is the character doing in the story. List as many actions as you can think of that are important to the character’s development. List anything from the story that describes what your character looks like. Describe what other people/characters in the story have said about the character you are describing.

  3. Example using “The Veldt” George has spoiled his children and now realizes that something is wrong with their behavior. He finally wants to start disciplining them but it might be too late. He wants to shut off the house. George tells Peter that he “won’t take threats from my son.” But it seems like he doesn’t really follow through enough with discipline even after he knows his kids are deeply troubled. George Hadley The psychiatrist that comes over to see the nursery tells George he used to be Santa to his kids giving them everything they ever wanted, but when he started to say no he is now Scrooge. He has let the children down in some way, and now they are getting him back for it. The short story doesn’t mention his appearance, other than to say that he drinks a little more each night, and smokes a little more each day. He must be in his late thirties early forties as his kids are 10.

  4. Directions from the packet: • Pick at least two characters from your story and fill out the chart below for each character then create a character summary paragraph of each. Record key points or ideas about your characters in the chart below as you read your novel. • Think about the characters you have in your novel, who could you use to do two character sketches on?

  5. Don’t forget to fill in the digital WSQ! And if you feel like you know more how to fill in the novel packet go take a look at that in notability! You are finished!
