  1. FAA R&D Overview • Anne Harlan, Director • William J. Hughes Technical Center • 68th NASAO Annual Convention • September 20, 1999

  2. FAA Mission FAA provides a safe, secure, and efficient global aerospace system that contributes to national security and the promotion of U.S. aerospace safety. As the leading authority in the international aerospace community, FAA is responsive to the dynamic nature of customer needs, economic conditions, and environmental concerns.

  3. FAA Strategic Goals • SAFETY: By 2007, reduce U.S. commercial aviation fatal accident rate by 80% from 1996 levels. • SECURITY: Prevent security incidents in the aviation system. • SYSTEM EFFICIENCY: Provide an aerospace transportation system that meets the needs of users and is efficient in the application of FAA aerospace resources.

  4. FAA Enabling Goals • Environmental: The environmental impact of aerospace must be reduced in ways which do not constrain aviation and commercial space transportation activities. • Others

  5. FAA R&D Mission Develop and validate technology, systems, designs, and procedures that support the FAA’s principal operational and regulatory responsibilities in: • Air Traffic Control • Certification of Aircraft and Aviation Personnel • Certification of Airports • Civil Aviation Security • Environmental Standards for Civil Aviation

  6. R,E&D Program Areas • Weather • Airport Safety • Aircraft Safety • Aviation Security • Human Factors • Environment and Energy • Air Traffic Management • Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance

  7. Weather • Develop real-time weather warning products and short- and long-term weather forecasts • Implement a system infrastructure to deliver enhanced weather information • Develop and deploy weather products and new weather initiatives that will build upon ongoing weather system development to realize full user benefits

  8. Airport Safety R&D • Airport Pavement • Runway Surface Technology • Airport Safety • Visual Guidance • Rescue and Firefighting • Wildlife Control
