  2. The Envy of Instagram • Shauna Niequist claims there to be 2 dangers of the internet: • 1. The partial truths evoked on Facebook & Instagram that “display the smiling couple-shot, but not the fight you had three days ago.” • 2. The envy developed from constantly creeping and comparing ourselves to others.

  3. Ffdgnkkjf!!!! • “I so easily fall prey to the seduction of other people’s partial truths and heavily filtered photos, making everything look amazing. And their amazing looking lives make me feel not amazing at all.”

  4. Conclusions • Instead of comparing each other, we should try connecting more often. • Ignore the public sphere (ex. news feed), and choose to interact in the private worlds of others via personal messaging, skype, etc. • “Build a community.”

  5. Question • Does our natural state of wickedness guarantee our evil activities on the internet? • “It’s about using what you’ve been given to craft a life of gratitude and passion and grace.” • Can our behavior change?

  7. Relationships • The latest research suggests that envy and jealousy are inevitable effects of social media participation. • Especially with people in romantic relationships.

  8. Are We Facebook Official? • A 2012 study examined how facebook affects one’s relationship satisfaction. • It found: • 1. Facebook profiles plays a role in the overall functioning of the relationship. • Men are happier when their profiles are linked with their partner’s profile. • Females are happier when their partners are displayed in their profile pictures. • Disagreements over the “facebook relationship status” status issue upsets women more than men.

  9. Another study found that: • Females spent more time on Facebook, had more Facebook friends, and were more likely to use profile pictures for impression management • Question: What other differences may there be amongst men and women on facebook?
