Chap 40 Basic Animal Form and Function
E N D
Presentation Transcript
Animal size and shape • Physical laws and environment constrain animal size and shape. • Exchange with the environment
Bioenergetics • The flow of energy thorugh an animal • Limits the animals behavior, growth, reproduction and determines how much food it needs. • Once energetic needs for “staying alive” are met, biosynthesis can take place.
metabolism • The amount of energy an animal uses over a given time period. • Aids in the quantification of an animals energy needs. • Related to its bioenergetic “strategy” • Body size directly affects an organiams metabolic rate.
Regulating and conforming • A regulator uses internal mechanisms to maintain homeostasis to the external. • A conformer allows its internal to fluxuate with a changing external. • All organism engage in both activities to some extent.
thermoregulation • Heat exchange occurs by 4 processes; conduction, convection, radiation and evaporation. • Insulation • Circulatory adaptations • Cooling • Behavior • Adjusting metabolic heat production
