  4. I. The Yalta Conference • FDR, Churchill, & Stalin met at Yalta (Feb. 1945) to plan the postwar world

  5. I. The Yalta Conference… B. Agreements/decisions made included… 1. Recognize the Polish govt. set up by the Soviets in Poland, with free elections held ASAP 2. Issued the Declaration of Liberated Europe which allowed people “to create democratic institutions of their own choice” 3. Germany would be divided into 4 zones after the war; Berlin would be divided too

  6. I. The Yalta Conference… C. As WWII came to an end, the U.S. & U.S.S.R. became more hostile toward each other; this new era of confrontation & competition between the two nations was called the Cold War (1946-1990) The Cold War divided the world into two hostile sides.

Tensions were rising because both sides had different goals Wanted to promote economic growth by increasing trade Wanted to encourage communism in other nations Wanted to keep Germany permanently weak U.S. U.S.S.R. Wanted to spread democracy Wanted a ring of pro-Soviet nations protecting Western border Wanted to promote a free enterprise system

  8. II. Truman Takes Office • Truman wasn’t afraid to stand up to Stalin • Truman & Stalin met at the Potsdam Conference 1. The Allies agreed to allow German industry to recover in their zones, while the Soviets demanded German reparations & kept their zone weak This was Truman’s first meeting with Allied leaders.

  9. II. Truman Takes Office… • The Soviets refused to uphold the Declaration of Liberated Europe & kept their army in E. European countries 1. Pro-Soviet communist govts. were set up here & these countries became satellite nations D. Winston Churchill referred to the division of Europe as an “iron curtain” “…From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. Behind that line lie all the capitals of the ancient states of Central & Eastern Europe…. All these famous cities and the populations around them lie in the …Soviet sphere, and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and …increasing measure of control from Moscow.” - Winston Churchill Churchill giving his “iron curtain” speech in March of 1946 at Fulton Missouri
