  2. Presentation Overview • Earlier in this unit, you explored the literary ideas of motifs and juxtaposition. If you do not remember those terms, now might be a good time to go back and review them. • You will be creating a PowerPoint presentation dealing with the juxtaposition of the motifs in King Lear. • You may go to the OpenOffice.org website to download a free version of PowerPoint.

  3. Presentation Overview • Your presentation, worth 100 points, should be 8 slides long and include: • 1. Title Slide - 5 points • 2. Introduction - 10 points • 3 - 4. Body Slide (one aspect of the juxtaposition) - 15 points • 5 - 6. Body Slide (the other aspect of the juxtaposition) - 15 points • 7. Context of Order vs. Chaos - 15 points • 8. Conclusion - 10 points

  4. Review of Terms • Motif • A recurring idea or something that keeps popping up in a piece of literature • Appears in some kind of pattern • Juxtaposition • Contrast in literature • Two different things positioned together in order to highlight each other

  5. Possible Motifs to Explore • 1. sanity / madness (wise / foolish) • 2. loyalty / betrayal • 3. natural / unnatural (legitimate / illegitimate) • 4. justice / injustice • 5. sight / blindness • 6. reality / appearance • 7. stability / instability (authority / anarchy)

  6. Choosing a Motif • Don’t choose at random; choose a motif you feel confident about. You should be able to think of multiple examples of the motif throughout the play. • Make sure you can not only point out examples, but can thoroughly explain how the motif is present and how it connects to the theme of order and chaos. • You might try making a list of examples for your chosen motif to see if you have enough to complete the presentation.

  7. Slide 1 – Title Slide • Should include all of the following • Your name • The title of the play • The motif you are exploring • You might want to think of a title for the presentation that is catchy and sums up what you will discuss in the presentation • Worth 5 points • Must include the above for full credit

Slide 2 - Introduction • This slide should do the same job as an introductory paragraph in an essay • Be sure to mention the name of the play and the motif you will be discussing • Introduce some of the concepts you will discuss in the slides to come • You may want to wait to write the slide until you have fully explored your motif • Worth 10 points: 5 for the idea, and 5 for the clarity of your argument

  9. Slides 3 & 4 – Body • These slides are like the body of an essay. Here, you will fully explain your motif, using specific examples and quotes from the play. • These slides should examine only one aspect of the juxtaposition. If you are writing about loyalty and betrayal, slides 3 and 4 should discuss only loyalty. • Each slide is worth 15 points, for 30 total • 5 points for your idea, 5 points for the explanation of your idea, and 5 points for the support from the text for that idea

  10. Slides 5 & 6 – Body • These slides are like the body of an essay. Here, you will fully explain your motif, using specific examples and quotes from the play. • These slides should examine the other aspect of the juxtaposition. If you are writing about loyalty and betrayal, slides 5 and 6 should discuss only betrayal. • Each slide is worth 15 points, for 30 total • 5 points for your idea, 5 points for the explanation of your idea, and 5 points for the support from the text for that idea

Slide 7– Context of Order vs. Chaos • This slide should explain how your chosen motif interacts with the theme of Order vs. Chaos – how does that juxtaposition represent order and chaos? • Don’t just discuss order and chaos in general! Relate it to what you have already discussed on your other slides. • Worth 15 points • 5 points for your idea, 5 points for the explanation of your idea, and 5 points for the support from the text for that idea

  12. Slide 8 - Conclusion • This slide should serve the same purpose as a concluding paragraph in an essay. • Be sure to restate the ideas you have discussed in the body, and mention your chosen motif again. • Go back and proofread all the slides for spelling, grammar and punctuation. It’s always a good idea to have a second person read it for you as well.
